MC Crashes Soon After Startup
« on: February 06, 2012, 10:30:54 am »

MC .82 is crashing within a minute of startup every time.

Here's the sequence of events leading to this problem:

1. Turned on our TV this morning. Lately I've been keeping MC running 24/7 on our HTPC. When I turned on the TV it showed an MC crash.

2. Restarted MC and was okay. Checked last nites recordings and a movie had stopped recording after about 30 minutes.

3. We have been getting a lot of crashes lately so decided to get some log files to send to JRiver. Got about 3 of them saved in Notepad and MC started repeatedly crashing.

4. Glanced through the log files (Previous) and they showed something about the HDPVR. but they also showed something about an Asus GBR. We only have one tuner which is the HDPVR. But in TV setup I had previously seen an Asus device twice as a tuner. I think the only Asus in our PC is our Graphics Card.

5. Turned off our HDPVR. Still crashing.

6. Turned HDPVR back on - still crashing.

7. Rebooted - crashing.

8. During the aprox 1 minute before crashing I managed to go to Tools/Options and set Startup to Nothing. Crashing

9. Then  in control panel set for only 1 monitor. The small VGA LCD. Crashing.

8. Reinstalled version .75 and rebooted crashing.

9. Unistalled MC17 (no other versions on machine). Kept Library during uninstall.

10. Reinstalled .82 - still crashing.

I'll send some of the log files to Matt. Am totally at a loss what to do here.

Thanks for any help.

I wonder why.  That's a clue that might be useful.  A hard disk problem?  If it's on the network, power cycle it.

Disconnect all drives and devices.

Disable import of ogg files.  We know there is a problem with them.

Do you know if any unattended updates happened that would have restarted your system last night.
I leave my system on 24/7 and have made it a habit to check up time to check for a restart if I see
a problem in the morning for possible troubleshooting purposes.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the prompt response. Here's what I have just done.

1. Turned off the 2 external USB HDD's.

2. Turned off the HDPVR.

3. Turned off the WHS. Note it is only being used as a file server to MC. The MC we are using now is on the HTPC and is not a Client.

4. Disabled the File Association of OGG files. Don't know what they are and don't believe I have any. BTW it's quite a challenge to go to Tools/Options and make a change before it crashes!

5. Rebooted.

No joy - still crashing.

Recordings are being made to the internal C drive. I have no indications of any problems with that drive.

Thanks for the ideas.

Not aware of any updates. How do you check for "Uptime"?

I believe my wife was watching recordings when the Movie recording stopped early. There was no indication to her of a problem. MC did not crash while she was watching, but happened sometime later.

You can probably get it going again by uninstalling and choosing "remove registry entries", rebooting and reinstalling.  You will lose settings, but you might be able to restore those from a backup, maybe an older backup to be safe.

I had crashing too (reported on beta this forum). I couldn't get to Standard View to access settings/log without a crash - because I boot into Theater View. This was on 2/4/12. I noticed an automatic Windows update was done on 2/3/12. Not sure if that caused problem or not. I ended up using the Windows System Restore (to point before update). Everything is fine now.

BTW - on all my other HTPC (those that only act as clients to MC) I leave Windows updating turned OFF. Only if the machine is used for web browsing do I let it update.

EDIT. I was using Version .80 or .81 at the time.

I had the same thing a few days before you, after rolling back and it being fixed I did some additional troubleshooting. I found that if I loaded the library backup from just before the rollback MC would crash again. I opened the library backup in a text editor and compared it to an earlier one that worked fine, what I found was a bunch of the entries were blank.  ?

Edit: just remember it wasn't a standard Windows update it was an update after reinstalling .net4 as I was having some trouble with it. Probably not directly related to your specific circumstance but still relevant IMHO.

@Scolex
Could you email me the library backup that is leading to a crash?  I'm matt at jriver dot com.

@nwboater
I don't have a log from you yet.  Could you try again?

Matt - Just emailed you a library backup. Thanks very much for trying to solve this! Glad to know that you found something in the log. Hopefully you can replicate the problem there.

Jim - I did do a reinstall using "remove registry entries" - still crashed. Will wait for instructions from Matt now before reinstalling from an older backup, unless you want me to try that now?

Scolex & Country Bumkin - Thanks for your posts. Good to know how to check for uptime. Mine is crashing in Theater View and Standard View, so may be different than CB's/

Think I'll sit tight on things till I hear back from Matt.

Looks like Sandra may miss her movie tonight.

Sure do appreciate so many of you so quickly trying to help.

In your library folder, make a copy of tvrecording.xml somewhere safe and then delete it.  Does that fix the crash?

If so, please email me the copy.

Thanks.

Well darn it, I went to do this but decided to fire up MC first to be sure it was still crashing. It wasn't MC  healed itself. It's now working fine without my doing anything more.

If it starts the crashing again I'll do what you advised above. Or do you suggest doing it now, even though it's not crashing?

Thanks again for jumping right on this problem!

Looks like Sandra will get her movie tonight.

I found this on the internet which may be of interest:

https://jira.skype.com/browse/SCW-1236?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel

Hi Yaobing - It's of much interest - thanks for finding it. I believe that the Asus GSB is an onscreen control and monitor for our Asus Video Card. I don't use the program and will look into eliminating it.

When I go to MC TV setup it shows the HDPVR and 2 of the Asus GSB's. Those are not tuners, but I don't see any way to eliminate them from the MC Tuner List. If I do need to keep that program is there some way to remove them from the Tuner List?

I'm wondering if some of our crashing that we periodically get is a result of the TV system trying to use those (non)devices?

Those devices do show up as video capture devices, that is why they show up in MC.  There is no way in MC to pick which device to appear.

You can use the method described on the page I linked.

Quote
Open Device Manager,
In the Device Manager dialog box, expand "Sound, video, and game controllers",
(If necessary click on View to show hidden devices)

Right-click on "Asus Virtual Video Capture Device Drive",
Disable (or uninstall) the device,

Okay they are now gone from MC TV Setup.

Thanks again for your help.

Hopefully we have a crashless night!
