audiotweak: crash problem
« on: February 27, 2012, 07:39:25 am »

I'm new to this forum, so if you'll excuse me, I may be a little off the topic here but here's my problem and I'm looking for some help too?
I just bought JRiver Media Center17 yesterday (27/02/2012), and I get this error on a brand new server I built using Windows 7, my Flac files don't even have to be playing, MC17 can just be static there with nothing being done on the server, and MC17 just crashes! Sometimes when I play music, a song will just stop dead and this stupid popup window shows it's ugly head again.

Here's the error:
Media Center 17 has stopped working
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

How do I fix this?

Thanks

Welcome, and thanks for the purchase.

To find the cause of the crash, first update to the latest:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=70371.0

If it still crashes, turn on logging in Help > Logging.

After a crash, look at the 'Previous Log' and see if it contains the word 'crashing'.  If so, post the last couple hundred lines of the log here.

Thanks.

Hi Matt;

Thanks for the warm welcome :-)

Thanks for the update link you sent me, MC17 is a lot more stable and my server Window7 needed Service Pack 1 update and other tons of updates too.
I've noticed that now when you're listening to music and you're adjusting Tree View settings and try various options of skins while music is playing, it may occasionally crash as if the CPU can't handle all the tasks, but my CPU is good even so.

Any ideas?

Thanks again for the fantastic help.

To make sure I understand, are you saying it only crashes now when you change skins?

Yes indeed, sometimes when I fiddle with skins settings and make minor adjustments to backgrounds, etc...
Also, just a few minutes ago, just had another crash, I wasn't even playing any music, I was in a different room from the AV room where the media server is set, upon getting back into that room, my screen had the same old error, and as soon as I clicked on the close button, JRiver shut down.
All updates on my Window7 are all up to scratch.
Anti-virus is off.
Automatic updates off.

I can't think of any reason why I get this error expecially when I'm not even using the server or playing any music?

I think we need to use logging.  From above:

Can you guys login with TeamViewer into my machine? The music server is connected with wi-fi to the router from another room.

I'm a bit clueless when it comes to logs...

OK, I will give it a shot.
Can you kindly advice on point #3) http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging, which "Event Log" should I pick? General, Playback... for...

After a crash, you need to look in the previous log.  It should contain the word 'crashing'.  More here:

If the log is too large to post, use the 'Email Logs' button on the same dialog and send the crash log to:
logs at jriver dot com

Thanks.

Had to send it manually via another PC with outlook because on my Media Server where JRiver is running I don't have Outlook, so if I click on the email log button, nothing happens there. Hope you get it on logs at jriver dot com

Thanks

Thanks for the log.  However, it doesn't show any sort of crash.

A crash log should contain the word 'crashing'.

OK, so what do you call that?

Media Center 17 has stopped working

Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

OK, so what do you call that?

The log you sent shows a normal run and shutdown after 48 minutes.

After a crash, once you restart Media Center, the previous log is the one we need.

Thanks.

Please post any details about your problem in this thread, instead of sending private messages.

I'm trying to help, but I have no idea what the problem is.  I need your help in return.

Thanks.

That shows that WinInet.dll is crashing.  This is the core Windows internet reading library.

Crashes in wininet.dll are not common, making me wonder if some internet security or anti-virus program is getting in the middle causing problems?  Would you be willing to uninstall any security programs and see if it solves the crashes?

It would also be helpful to see a JRiver log (Help > Logging) from a crash.

Thanks.

Hi Matt;

No, as default, any security or firewalls are deliberately disabled, so no prob there.

I just recently installed Windows and only entered the registration key today, after doing this things improved dramatically.
I also disabled the background artist pics that normally runs when music plays, because my Wi-Fi signal is real poor in the AV room, I thought because the Wi-Fi was erratic that JRiver might be looking on the net for pics and find out that it cant retrieve any and this could cause issues with the stability of JRiver. As a result things have become much much more stable now. I haven't picked up any error yet, but will keep my eyes peeled and keep you informed.

Your feedback on the above would be much welcome :-)
