Static sound when browsing images and playing music with ASIO
« on: February 18, 2012, 04:11:33 pm »

I'm currently browsing through my photo albums while listening to some music on MC.  I'm getting a sort of static feedback or almost a skipping sound each time I change to the next picture.  This only seems to happen when the output is set to ASIO.

Using a Asus xonar essence stx and the UNI asus drivers.

Hi,

I have the same issue using Asus Xonar D2X.
So far the only way to limit it was setting the latency to 30ms in the ASIO panel.
Also set buffering to 0.5 and use large hardware buffers.

This is my idea for the fix, I am happy to hear about any other solutions or corrections that my complete solve this issue.

Thanks

I seem to have a similar issue although slightly different.   I have tried to trouble shoot the issue and at this stage everything is pointing to a MC issue.

Here is the current prognoses.

I use Wasapi.   All Flac files at 24/48.   10sec buffer.    Audio via Sotm USB3 card to Audiophilleo2 and direct to a digital amp.    The static sound only seems to come on after I have been using MC (v16) for 5 or 6 hours.   Once it starts it sounds like static in the background behind the music.   It then appears every few minutes and last 2 or 4 seconds at a time.

I have found that if I stop MC completely and then restart it the static disappears.    When I stop the MC I leave the PC and the Amp on so I guess that would suggest it is not either of those items causing the static.

I have swapped the USB lead from Sotm USB3 to motherboard USB2 and the static will still appear after longterm use.

It almost sounds to me like a build up of some sort of audio interference over time that then manifests itself into the static sound.    The fact that is stops once I have turned MC on and off would suggest it is not a electrical power issue from my AC or similar.

Any thoughts from the MC gurus?

Try turning the Audiophileo off and back on as well, just to test.

Try a very small buffer.

Thanks Jim.  I dropped it back from 10 to 6 sec buffer and so far so good but I only had the system on for a few hours today.

I'll let you know if you suggestion is a winner.

Just a follow up to the static issue.

At this stage I have tracked the issue back to the power supply from the motherboard/psu to the SOtm USB card.   The card has the ability to receive external power via a DC jack and wall wart.   I installed the wall wart yesterday thereby bypassing the internal PC psu power.    Aside from having a very good effect on the overall sound of the music the wall wart kept the static at bay for a longer period.    When it did arrive through the speakers it was very much muted and shorter in duration.

When I run the USB cable on one of standard PC USB2 output connectors I have no problem but the quality of audio is nowhere near as good as with the specialist SOtm Card.

I stopped the JRiver and restarted it and the muted static sound disappeared.   It is almost like the stop and start seems to reboot the issue.    I am going to remove the SOtm Card today and apply Deoxit Gold G5 to the  cards electrical connectors and see if that has an effect.

With the above diagnosis would anybody hazard a guess where the root of the problem might be.  I guess there is 3 areas.     SOtm, motherboard or PSU IDE pin.   I only have the 1 PCIe slot in the MB so I can't move it for testing purposes.

Mmm,

I can not prove it but it seems we have tracked it to PSU connector and PCIe board. I used Juli@ soundcard before in a regular slot, no clicks and smooth response. Now using Asus D2X with an power connector gives me all kind of clicks. They also appear when I use Gizmo as a remote control, so I was expecting it to come from the PCI bus.......

Maybe this reply can help finding the solution.
