I cannot get Gizmo working from my Archos tablet when Windows Firewall on my pc is turned on. When I turn Windows Firewall off it works fine, so it has to do with the settings in Windows Firewall.
When I open Windows Firewall settings I see that Media Center 17 is listed as Allowed for Home Network. Is there anything else I have to do there ?

You need to open a port for access.  This might help:

When I look at the Inbound Rules in Windows Firewall on my pc I see Media Center 17 "Enabled", "Allowed", and "Any" for Ports (TCP and UDP).
Is that not enough or correct ?

It has not to do with my modem/router, because when I turn Windows Firewall Off, everything works.

And I forgot to mention that Gizmo did work in the past, that is after I installed MC 17 the 1st time. Last week however I uninstalled and re-installed MC and also updated to build 117. Didn't try Gizmo then, but now I did and cannot get connection. Nothing was changed in Windows meanwhile.

I solved it meanwhile by checking the "Public" box as well for MC 17 in Windows Firewall.
Just to be sure: Has this indeed to be checked ?

You probably only need 52199 open.  It's whatever port Media Network is on.

I was too soon. I thought it was solved, but after rebooting I have the same problem.
I don't understand it. Even when Media Center is set to "Any Port" it doesn't work.
Have to give up, I think, this is too complicated for me. Probably I would not use Gizmo that much, but I can't stand it that it doesn't work.

Btw, I also tried to remove MC 17 from Windows Firewall and after that I got the question if I wanted to allow MC to connect etc. I said yes, but still no success with Gizmo.

Maybe you have more than one firewall? Zone alarm, McAfee, etc?

No I didn't have another firewall installed. But meanwhile I installed Zone Alarm (and Windows Firewall was disabled automatically). Then Zone Alarm asked me a few times to allow MC (after starting MC and enabling Media Network) and after saying Yes it works again.
So something weird is going on in Windows Firewall. I think I leave it disabled and use ZA instead.

I think I have found meanwhile what the cause was: Windows Live Essentials !
With my Archos tablet I could not connect to my pc (shared folders) because I was asked for a user name and password although I had disabled "password" for the network. Searching for a solution for this I found a post in an Archos forum saying that Windows Live Essentials probably was the cause and that uninstalling that could solve it. I uninstalled Windows Live Essentials and it worked. But to my surprise I could also use Gizmo with Windows Firewall enabled (and ZoneAlarm uninstalled).
So this may be of interest for others having problems.

Update:

Still NOT solved as it turned out when I rebooted this morning.
No connection with Windows Firewall enabled. As soon as I turned Windows Firewall off everything was fine.
This is really driving me mad.
Reinstalled ZoneAlarm, which disabled Windows Firewall in turn, "allowed" MC 17 and all fine again.
Think I will leave it that way.

If you want to mess with it one more time.
Windows Firewall
Advanced Settings
Inbound Rules->Right Click->New Rule
Select port
Click next
Choose TCP
Specfic local port: put in port 52199 (or whatever port you are using in MC's Media Network Settings)
Click Next
Allow the connection
Click Next
Make sure Domain, Public and Private are checked
Click Next
Put in a name that you like
Click done.

I don't know what's happening, but it sounds like your rules are getting reset when you reboot. Are you in a windows domain??

Tools->Options->Media Network->Advanced->TCP Port. The default is 52199. That's the port you want to enable in the inbound rule I was describing. It should always be 52199 unless you've changed it...

After adding the rule you described I can get connection with Windows Firewall enabled (and ZoneAlarm disabled).
What I don't understand (most probably because of my lack of knowledge) is that when I delete the (new) rule and apply the same settings to the already present inbound rule of Media Center 17 TCP it doesn't work. I mean: There were already 2 Inbound rules for Media  Center 17, TCP and UDP, linked to media center 17.exe. When I apply the settings you gave me to the TCP rule, it doesn't work. However when I leave both rules alone and add the new rule everything is fine, also after several reboots.
Anyway I don't need ZA anymore. Thanks again for your help.

Sometimes I think the windows firewall settings get messed up and it's unclear as to what is going on in the background...
It's also possible that you chose only public OR private when first prompted and the current network adapter you are using is using the the profile that you didn't allow.

I tried Gizmo with JRiver Mediacenter25 on Ubuntu.
I can browse the catalog(s) (albums, songs, ...) but when I am trying to play it says "the player has stopped".
I can play everything under Windows 10 with Gizmo.
I would also like to get it working on Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
