Is there a way to set a 'normal' ASIO source, but in the absence of said source, for MC to default to Directsound/etc?

Zones would be one method.

Was looking for a hassle-less way of disconnecting a soundcard from a laptop and play from onboard. i.e. seamless switch between ASIO / etc and directsound depending on what's plugged in.

Sure, zones is one option, but really no less of a hassle than realising it doesn't play and then clicking the menu couple of times.

Will Windows do this if the preferred default is not available?

Nick.

Zones are the JRiver answer for using different hardware devices.

Zone switching is pretty simple but there's no automatic way to switch zones based on hardware availability.

Well no, it's a j.River issue since if I want to switch between an ASIO capable card in ASIO and the onboard, it's not up to Windows.

It is just that Windows is doing its device autodiscovery all the time and forgets your asio device and removes it from the device lists when you unplug it.
If MC then tries to play to the zone, where the asio device was configured, it cannot find it any more. MC then reverts to the default windows sound device and forgets all about the asio device.

You could try to have two zones, one configured with the default windows onboard sound device and one zone configured with your asio sound device.
Play to both zones to check everything is ok. Then select the default onboard zone and unplug the asio device and play again. And last plug your asio device again and select the zone. Does it play without reconfiguring ?

I'll have to play around with that. Will report back with results.
