Subtitles failing on Xbox, alternatives?
« on: May 21, 2012, 10:59:28 am »

So continuing my quest to only have one media server program running I was trying to get TV episodes with SRT subtitles (Game of Thrones if it matters) to have the subtitles show up when streaming to my 360. I set the subtitle options in MC to show when a SRT file exists and then I set the DLNA server for the 360 to always transcode. This results in the 360 not being able to play anything at all. I tried like 8 different formats (including the default WMV 720P) and all of them fail to play at all when conversion is set to Always convert. Changing it back to the default of Convert unsupported with WMV 720P results in the file playing fine, but no subtitles.

I'm to the point where I'm willing to purchase another device if it will let me stream files the way I want, but searching through the forums here for DLNA seems to indicate that there isn't any device that can actually play video with any kind of reliability when subtitles are involved. Additionally, having only one set of subtitle settings and not a setting for each DLNA server seems kinda... clunky. Is there a solution I'm missing, or is my quest to only use MC destined for failure currently and I need to go back to ps3mediaserver/TVersity, both of which do subtitles fine?

What format are your video's in (for the most part)?

The Xbox template will probably result in most video being played un-converted (with the notable exception of mpeg2).

When you do "Convert Always" to WMV 720 you should get everything to play, if it doesn't, that's a problem.

The lack of subs is another problem. Currently we don't support them with WMV conversion, you'd likely have to try mp4 but then you'd have to wait until it was finished converting before you could play.

Let's see if we can get your "Convert Always" to WMV 720 working and we'll see what we can do with the subs...

In my TV dir:
3310 avi
86 mp4
56 mkv
13 MPG

Note that pretty much all new SD TV is switching from xvid/avi to x264/mp4 currently/in the near future, so that ratio will start to slowly change. eg: Game of Thrones switched to mp4 with s02e07, and I havent tried that yet since I'm not that far in the show. :)

The one I'm currently trying to get working is an avi with a .sub (I said .srt before, I was mistaken). I can't run any actual tests till I get home tonight, but here's a silly amount of info till then. :) When I get home, I'll set it to always convert, restart MC and the Xbox just to be sure, and see if I can't get some output after doing that.

Okay, I set it to always convert to WMV and the 360 displays the Opening text for about 10 seconds then gives the Unplayable Content error. I'm guessing this is relevant:

Any further thoughts on this? I tried some more random settings changes and still can't get the WMV transcode to work.

I'm pretty sure the xbox360 does not support showing subtitles, except when they are hardcoded obviously.

Right, that's why I'm trying to get transcoding working so they can potentially be hardcoded in. :)

It's a work in progress, we need to find a way to do it without the MS foundation classes or direct show.

I can't even get the transcode to work, subtitles or no. You implied above that I should be able to, but I'm not seeing any other options to try...

Can you play the files from within MC?

Yes. I can also play them on the 360 if I don't force transcoding.

I'm sorry your problem isn't solved, but you've had 3 answers from Bob so far.  I think that counts as support.

It started great, he asked questions, I answered them, then he went away...

Awesome, sounds good, lets do this! I added some information I thought would be helpful and got:

I assumed this referenced the subtitle issue. That's okay, if it doesn't work for anyone currently, then it's likely not going to work for me either.

I restated the issue that WMV transcoding doesn't work for me at all and that he said it was supposed to work.

My understanding is that the file plays with subtitles in MC, that it plays without subtitles on the Xbox.

Is that correct?

It plays perfectly in MC. It plays fine without subtitles on the Xbox using the Xbox 360 DLNA server. If I change the default 360 Server to Video: Conversion: Always Convert (Video: Encoder: WMV 720P) then the 360 will not play it.

We're working on changing the method of encoding to wmv. I wasn't able to reproduce your issue with conversion but since we are changing the conversion anyway it seems like changing the old method is not a good place to spend a lot of resources. When we get the new conversion working properly it should fix the subtitles problem as well.

Okay, I'm good with that. I was confused because it seemed like you were saying it should work, and it doesn't, so I wanted my installation to be "correct". Do you know if that's going to be a 17 or 18 change?

We won't know until it's working.
