When trying to burn a CD i get the message " can't start the burn".  I have tried to start as administrator.  That did not help. unistalled media center 17 and reinstalled with firewalls off. That did not help.  So I need help.  I have also been getting messages that media center is not responding and windows 7 shuts it down.

Hello again:  I posted this request on the 16th and got one responder with a suggestion.  I followed his suggestion but it did not resolve the problem.

I will restate my problem:

I just bought MC17 last week.  I am a pretty rank amateur at this so any help will be gratefully received.

Can you list the exact steps you take?  Normally, you would open the Burn window from the lower left corner, select some files, then drag them to the window.  Then you press the burn button.  You must choose an Audio CD, not a Data CD.

What kind of media are you using?  Did you try any other?

What type of files?  MP3?  Where did you get them?  Do they play?

1.    I choose Audio CD.
2.    I have 2 drives that both will work with Windows Media player and I choose a drive.  The media I am using is Optical Quantum LightScribe Gold 52x 80 min 700 MB CD-R Discs, which also work fine in Windows Media player.
3.    I drag a Playlist to the window.  The play list contains songs ripped from a CD and the format is wma lossless.
4.    I press burn.
5.   A window opens and says “confirm start of burn”.  I press the yes button.
6.   An information window opens stating “can’t start the burn.
7.   I press ok and that’s the end.  Nothing happens.

Try dragging a couple of MP3 files to the window.  Try a couple of WMA files if that works.

What happens if you try to play the WMA files in MC?

When you said "I have 2 drives that both will work with Windows Media player and I choose a drive.", do you mean MC?

What happens if you try using the other drive?

I meant that both drives work with wmp but neither work with mc17.
That was then and now its now.  I changed the format from wma to ape and it accepted it and i was able to burn a CD. That gets me started.  Thanks so much JimH.
