"Buffering" in the middle of songs playing HiRes from LAN
« on: June 23, 2012, 05:20:08 am »

Hello,
Lately I started collecting 24/192 HiRes music and have problems playing it. the configuration is as follows:
music is stored on a RAID5 disk on computer A (core i7 win7 x64 ultimate) in a shared folder in FLAC format. HiRes is typically ~5500 kbps.
player, computer B, is core i3, win7 x64 as well, connected via a 1GB LAN to computer A. the library is local and refers to the remote files.
copy entire HiRes (nearly 1GB) album from A to B is done in typical rate of ~45 MBytes/sec.
playing the album on computer B from local SSD disk - no problems.
playing the album on computer A, from RAID - no problem.
playing the album on B from A - many "Buffering" interrupts up to the point it becomes not usable.
CPU and network utilization on both computers is very (very) low.
I tried correlating the hiccups with antivirus activity, disk activity, network activity - nothing I could spot.
changing the prebuffering from the recommended 6 sec to 20 makes the hiccups sparser but longer.
out of clues... ?

forgot to mention:
Foobar2000 plays the same files, from the same exact location, without a blink, not to say hiccups.

I'm using ASIO. the device is Teralink X2 USB to SPDIF converter. it comes with its own driver. please note playing the hi res material from the local disk works flawlessly. ASIO settings: HW buffer option is checked. when incresing the buffer size using the slider I experience miss-sync between voice and video when playing movies.
I'm very frustrated. One main reason for going from a CD to music computer, and one main reason to choose JRiver, is working easily with different formats.
please keep guessing. there must be something I overlooked and someone from the outside is more likely to spot it.

Memory playback on?
Put if off when pulling the data from another PC.

placed the buffer value back to 0.25 but also added -250 millisec (negative) A/V sync on the video section. so far seems OK.
I'll report further after listening some more.
I don't use the memory option. no moving parts in the player anyway
