energy and economy update
« on: June 29, 2012, 01:06:59 pm »

Here are 2 must watch presentations from the recent ASPO 2012 conference.

The first is a forecast of oil production. Despite what you hear from mainstream media about abundant shale oil and tar sands, it is probable that total world production of oil will drop by about 50% within 10 years.

My conclusions from this are that since GDP is proportional to energy consumption we can expect world GDP to be at least 50% lower within 10 years. The price of all paper assets (stocks, bonds, cash, etc.) are dependent on future GDP growth, therefore we can expect the value of most paper assets to decline by 50-90% over the next 10 years. Note that I think these dire predictions are on the optimistic side since a 50% reduction in oil is the best we can achieve given geology, however reality may prove to be much worse if credit, currencies, trade, and social cohesion collapse.

The second presentation is by Nate Hagens who I think has the best big picture understanding of our predicament of anyone on the planet. He explains where we are, why we got here, where we are likely going, and what we need to do.

I don't have an Axe, But I Have A 24 Inch Machete

I don't Have A Water Filter, But Been Thinking About Getting One. I was thinking about boiling the water to kill the germs. I do have 2 each army 5 gallon water cans (about $39.00 each) I keep full of water in case the power goes out and can use it to add to the toilet to allow for flushing.

Good Idea about the mouse traps, that could be another protein source (I do have 10 or 20 new snap traps already).

Not sure I would need an Ipod.

the rest I have in my survival kit. that is in 12 containers 1 1\2 feet by 32 inches (approx), not including a army arctic tent (sleeps about 8 people).

take it worse case, there will be no food, no gas, no AC, No hospital, No Walmart, What? No Walmart!, Nope.

you will not need hard drives, there is no Internet, No phone company, No cable, No Power, No direct TV, No cell phone.

everyone will be coming to your house, and if you talk softly, they will sucker punch you and take what you got.

a bike is a good idea! (I have two)

Cheep vodka can be used as fuel also.

I'm expecting to operate without a reliable and/or affordable internet. Would like a decade or 2 before I die to enjoy my movies and music, hence the spare hard drives since they are guaranteed to fail.
