Major Playback Problems thru Multiple MC Versions...
« on: August 07, 2012, 03:31:03 pm »

Hi all,

I have MC 17.0.182 (registered).  I am having playback problems with JRiver dating back through version 17, 16, maybe back to 14.  I have not had a chance to work on it till now (yes, its been misbehaving for a long time).  All the other media player brands on my aging system work fine except JRiver.  When I try to play an audio file, the sound is extremely garbled (stutters and sounds "underwater").  Sometimes MP3s work fine, but sometimes not.  No other audio formats work right.  Sometimes videos work, but often not at all.

I seem to be able to get AUDIO formats semi-working if I set "settings for file types" to playback = JRiver VIDEO Engine (using DirectShow Filters).

I uninstalled and reinstalled.  I uninstalled Combined Community Codec Pack and reinstalled (but I may not have it configured right); doesn't help.

Also, JRiver is unstable and doing things within the program (like scrolling through the library) can sometimes make playback jerky; I get frequent crashes and freezes.  I also now seem to have a problem where its hard to drag the volume slider to the right (may be a separate issue?  "Startup Volume" is set to 80%, but when restarting, JRiver strangely ignores this.).

I've been using JRiver since at least version 7 and love it, but I can't use it like this.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
BigCat

If you're having trouble in multiple versions, there may be a driver or other hardware issue.

Do not try using DirectShow until you solve it.

For video, choose Red October Standard.

For audio choose DirectSound.

Set playback to automatic for all filetypes.

Under Help, run the benchmark feature and copy the results here.

Foolow the wiki for audio settup.  See "Getting Started" in my signature.

Hi Jim, thanks for the fast reply.

"... or audio choose DirectShow."

For this part, did you mean "Direct Sound"?  That is what it is set to in Option -> Audio -> Audio output -> Output mode.

OK, here are the benchmark results.

DirectSound, yes.  Sorry.

That's not a very powerful PC by today's standards.  It should be fine for audio, but disable any visualizations or anything else you can that's using CPU cycles.  A virus checker can also cause problems if it's using the disk heavily in the background.

I hope you'll stay with this problem until you get it sorted.  Please use this thread rather than starting a new one.

Other things that have caused problems in the past is listed in the "Weird Problems" thread in my signature.

Yes, my computer leaves much to be desired.  Unfortunately, it may be some time before I can get a new one.  The other media players on this machine work, but of course I want to be able to use MC!  When playing a mp3 with the "garbling", Windows Task Manager tells me resources are not being tapped out at all (CPU ~10%).  Right now (problem is random) some video formats are working.  I don't think my slow and old computer is the main problem in itself.

On the other hand, is that an unusual score for for an AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 2 GB RAM, and HIS Radeon HD 4650 (1GB RAM)?

Anyway, I have now gone through the three pages of "Weird Problems".  I uninstalled Nero 7, to no avail.  Still having the issues.

Please try a few different audio output modes (Options > Audio).

Make sure memory playback is off, and disable all DSP.

Also, update your audio drivers if possible.

OK, we're getting somewhere!  In DSP studio, I disabled DirectX Host and "garbling" went away.  I can listen to .ape (and other non-mp3 files) for the first time this year!  I was using DirectX Host to play rgcAudio High Frequency Stimulator, but even with DirectX Host on and rgcAudio off I got garbling.   What does it mean?

I still have a (likely separate) problem with the volume slider.  I have Options -> Startup  - set volume to 80%.  When I restart MC it just puts the volume at its last setting/level, not 80%.  Then when I start playing an audio file, volume drops to 20%!  Then I try and drag slider to the right it is hard (mouse acts weird, shakes, doesn't want to go).

DirectX Host hasn't been needed or supported for many versions.  So please uninstall or delete DirectX Host.  It's probably a bug that the program is even trying to use it.

You can install VST and DirectX DSP plugins directly using the button at the lower left of DSP Studio.

This is normal once you turn on Volume Protection.  It's off by default, and settable in the volume menu.

"You can install VST and DirectX DSP plugins directly using the button at the lower left of DSP Studio."

I am looking here in "Add DirectShow DSP Filter" and their is a list of items like ParamEQ, Gargle, etc.  When I try to install them it says "Output format not supported".  I assume these are left over from earlier versions, too.  How do I clean them out and otherwise organize this section?

Also, is their a good place somewhere for quality JRiver, VST, or Winamp plugins or DirectShow Filters to play with in MC?

Thanks!
