Can't play 24-bit / 96 kHz / 6 ch flac [Solved]
« on: August 19, 2012, 07:16:44 pm »

I ripped a DVD-Audio, to flac, using DVD Audio Extractor and the MC17 player won't play it. It will play it as 2 channel. I am bitstreaming to my AVR via HDMI and everything else plays OK. I believe I have everything configured correctly. I have attached the relevant screen captures.

After creating this post, I installed foobar2000, with DVD-A support, and it is able to play songs from the physical DVD-A disk and the flac file (both at 24-bit/96kHz/6ch). So my computer hardware appears to support it.

So why doesn't MC17 think my hardware supports 24/96/6 when foobar2000 does?

What output mode are you using? try setting MC to WASAPI - Event Style or plain WASAPI.

I had tried both and neither worked for me.

Odd  :-\ but not suprising as I have a similar problem myself with 192k material, I wont go into detail and hijack your thread though  ;D
Hopefully one of the Devs will shed some light on this.

I posted the same problem and told to try output mode "direct sound". This worked for me and was told it must be a HDMI driver problem. It doesn't look like I have any way to update this driver on my VIAO laptop.

Yep, Direct Sound also worked for me. Looks like that is the same mode that foobar2000 uses. I don't think Direct Sound provides bit-perfect audio, and bit-perfect is the objective, but maybe it is better than down-grading to 2 channel?

Is the issue here with the software or hardware or both; i.e. would a different audio card solve the issue?

Most likely. I had no issue with an old Asus HDAV with analog extension board, with Asio, Analog out

HDMI out from ATI graphics card to Denon receiver, WASAPI Event Style set in MC.  No issues with 96/24 six channel audio here.  Just tested with my Moving Pictures Blu Ray tracks (from FLAC versions).

I can also play 6 channel 24/96 over HDMI with WASAPI Event Style via Radeon HD5450.

:( My HTPC (Dell INSPIRON zino HD) has the audio and video integrated onto the motherboard. Dell lists the video adapter as an "AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5450 MXM Discrete Graphics Card" and the audio as "Integrated 2.1 high definition audio and up to THX 7.1 Audio". SIW (System Info for Windows) reports an "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series" video device (Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series]) and a High Definition Audio Controller (Cedar HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5400/6300 Series]).

I don't have any problems bitstreaming (WASAPI Event Style) any DVD audio (DTS, DD, etc. ) or Blu-ray audio (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, etc.) to my AVR. No problems with 24-bit / 96 kHz / 2 ch and 24-bit / 192 kHz / 2 ch either.

Gary it could be worth trying Realteks build of the ATI HDMI Audio driver, it fixed a similar issue for a colleague, if it doesnt work you can always roll back the driver.
Its listed as 'ATI HDMI Audio Device' on Realteks Download Page
I believe that Realtek developed the audio section for the Radeon cards so offfer this generic driver.

Thank you for the link. According to the date stamp, the drivers are certainly newer than what Dell is providing. Unfortunately they didn't help. I can't tell if they are any better, or worse, than what I was using but I'll keep using them anyway.

I wonder if there are any programs that can convert .flac to Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio? I'll have to look for that.

Edit: "Unfortunately they didn't help". Having said that, since I am sending the audio over the HDMI cable, wouldn't Windows, and therefore foobar2000, be using the ATI HDMI driver as well? foobar2000 plays the multi-channel .flac files.

There are tools available to encode to DTS-HD-MA but they are incredibly expensive, not sure about Dolby True HD.
I am still trying to pin down the cause of my own issue (can't playback 2 channel 192k over HDMI) so I'll share anything I discover, it may help.

foobar2000 plays the multi-channel .flac files.

Just spotted this, are you using the wasapi output module in foobar?

You are the man!  :)

Not unless it is included in the base installation. The foobar2000 guide I used didn't mention it. I'll check it out (and will probably find that it has the same issues as MC17).

Is a GT430 video card the answer to my audio problems?

So I have an older computer with an Nvidia GeForce 9300 based motherboard in it. I put an Nvidia GeForce GT4300 video card in it (thank you to renethx's posts recommending it) and now everything is working; including 24-bit / 96 kHz / 6 ch audio.  ;D

I do. I downloaded a Righteous Brothers track from HDTracks, and it plays fine.
