MC17 and network shares WOL
« on: August 20, 2012, 06:04:38 am »

Hi,

I have used MC17 for a couple of months now and I am now starting to spend a little time on the setup and how to do things smarter.
I only use MC17 for audio - not video or other of its features.

My setup are as follows:
MC17 is installed on a Samsung Series9 laptop (Windows 7). The audio goes to my dac (Ayre QB9) via USB - bitperfect.
ALL audio files are located on a network server which runs Windows 7.

MC17 is auto-importing all audio files via a normal network share on the server: \\server\musicfolder

I use Gizmo on my Android phone to control MC17.

I have configured the Samsung laptop to sleep after 30 minutes - WOL from Gizmo works perfectly.
My server is also configured to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Up until now I have manually waked up my server by sending a magic packet from my phone before using Gizmo to control MC17.

But is it possible for MC17 to send a magic packet to my server when Gizmo wakes up the laptop? In this way I don't need to manually send a magic packet from my phone, instead Gizmo wakes up the laptop which then wakes up the server...

I have searched the forum for an answer but haven't found anything - perhaps my English skills prevents me from doing a search on the correct keywords  ?

Also I am wondering if my setup is the smartest - perhaps i should install MC17 on the server also and set this up as a library server. And then use MC17 on the laptop just to stream the audio from the server.
Would this be the "correct way" and would it solve my problem regarding the automatic WOL of the server?

Thanks in advance and sorry if my question is answered elsewhere

Best regards
Michael

Welcome to the forum.  Gizmo sends a wake up packet.

Installing MC on the server would also work.

Hi Jim,

Thanks :-)

Yes the packet from Gizmo works flawlessly - it wakes up the laptop in the living room. But my question was more towards the server where the music files are actually stored - is there a way to wake the server without having to do this manually?

Perhaps my setup isn't done the correct or in the best way? Would it be a more correct way also to install MC17 on the server?
I am a little confused towards how to do this the best way. I mean my server isn't connected to a screen, speakers or anything it just functions as a storage on the network. So what would be the benefits if I also install MC17 on the server?

Is there a wiki somewhere that address's best practice when having a server and one or more PC's connected the the same network?

It would indeed be useful for MC to send a WOL to the place where its files are being served from as this would also be suitable for when a MC PC accesses a NAS server for the files. It's not always a Windows server that serves the files.

This could be configured somewhere in MC - a list of IP addresses to send a WOL to whenever MC itself itself wakes up.

Other than that, yes you are correct, to avoid the issue you would have to put MC itself on the same PC as your files in order to get Gizmo to wake it up properly.

I don't think that's Gizmo's job.  The PC should wake the server if it needs a file.

There's a setting for wake on network activity.  I believe it's a network hardware option, possibly also in the BIOS.  You could try that on the server.
