Hi everyone

First post for me.

I am all Mac and will be buying MC for certain. I would strongly favour releasing something ASAP. It would enable
me to play with MC and find my way around and "grow" with the updates.

Is the initial release the pre-alpha release JohnT speaks of?
Yes.

Is the 30 day timeout version only going to be available to The Early Birds (ie, paid customers only)?
No.  Anyone will be able to download it.  The reduced price will only be available for a few weeks or so.

Initial release is the alpha.

The timeout versions will be available to anyone.

The feature list isn't set yet, but assume audio only for now.  Skins should work.

Here's our plan.  Please comment if you have a way to improve it.

1.  The license will be separate from the Windows version.

2.  Initial releases will have a 30 day timeout.  There may be more than one of these.

3.  The final price will be the same as the Windows version.

4.  The Early Bird price will be $25.  No refunds.

5.  It probably won't be dependable for daily use for the first 3 months.

Works for me... I'm in, just let me know where and when.

First post for me too, as new to JRiver.  Looking forward to trying it out.

What does Early Bird price mean? Is it a full licence just at a cheaper price for early adopters? Is it a one off payment for version 1, which entitles you to free updates?

Thanks

Yes.  Free updates within the major version, in this case MC18.  Here's how it works:

And welcome to the forum.

sounds. good.  i have no pre-existing JRiver license/experience.  Just want to start the journey off iTunes to MC.  So, I pay $25 for full entitlements.

Just 2 questions:
- if the Mac version is abandoned before a 1.0 production release...refund..or that's the risk we take as early adopter vs doing the 30 day trials?
- Will you have any formal or suggested ways that you would like to get feedback during the alpha/beta phase?

...Feel free to comment on just how stable you think the pre-Alpha needs to be in order to be useful for public testing, without causing too much frustration...

For me the only criteria for early Alpha is that the media does not get deleted or corrupted.

EDIT: and the install should not trash the PC (e.g. you should be able to do a complete uninstall followed by a clean install)

EDIT EDIT: and it should not harm glynor's dog ;)

It won't be abandoned.  No way, no how.  They've spent at least 2-3 years rewriting most of the code for MC to be OS agnostic, to make this to happen.  Unless JRiver fails as a company, once released, it will continue to be improved.  Of that you can be sure :)

Hey all,

First post for me.  I love MC on the PC*.  I use it for audio and video.  I'm definitely willing to pay $25 for the early bird Mac version.  I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay the same price as for the PC version if the Mac version didn't include video playback as well.

I think making it a priority so that it can work as a client for a windows server will make it easier to make the switch faster. You can trust the server with your library and the mac client can not screw anything up.

If the early bird version contains features for high quality audio playing I am in. I mean so it really takes all the audio data there is to take from my flac files. Audio is number one for me, video features and other stuff can come when ready.

Yes I am definitely interested in the early bird version; the plan looks ok to me.

On the stability factor I agree with earlier comments that as long as it does not mess up your entire pc or media and provides a clean install/uninstall it's no problem.

First post also.  Yes I have been waiting, sitting on the fence regarding which software to use.  I have leaned towards JRiver and would also support testing it.  It would be useful if it can read apple lossless files, as all my music is loaded with itunes.  Looking forward to the trials.

The Windows version of MC now fully supports Apple Lossless (including encode).  That's probably a very good sign.

Well this is most interesting.  I've been using alternatives on my Mac Mini for some time.  None have been able to provide quality sound and ease of use.

Just about to install a Win 8 solution and MC on Monday.  Doing so for reasons stated, as well as a better hardware platform for feeding my DAC.  I'm pretty certain I'll opt for the OS X version of MC as well, especially at the intro price, just to compare it against Amarra and other players, even if I don't use that system ever again.

That brings up licensing.  How does that work.  Is it across all OS X systems a user owns?  Is it forever?  Is it transferable when you buy a replacement Mac?

That is how the windows licensing works, I would assume the OS X licensing would operate the same way.  But, you know what they say about assuming ;)

My principal interest in MC on a Mac is audio-only, and I will be looking out for the early bird notification for that.

In the meantime, and I recognise this may be premature, but could a Mac (which does not natively decode .wtv files as far as I know) acting as a client to a Windows server play .wtv files? In other words, does the decoding take place on the server side, on the client side, or does MC not play .wtv files at all? Just thinking about a better use of a mini that's a little under-utilised...

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I can't wait to use JRiver for Mac.

Apple really jumped the shark with iTunes 11.

Apple could have easily made the iTunes library management portion of iTunes a "pro" version and charged for it, out of the box competitive with JRiver.

Instead, it's 12 pounds of iTunes Store and iPhone sync into a 5 pound sack.

I need an iTunes library manager on a Mac.

Tools/Options/General/Features

Is the the code base being used for the Mac version shared with MC 18 right now? If not, can you compile the Mac code for the Windows platform? Just curious.

Yes, they share the same code base.  Only the low level code for various things (drawing to the screen, file handling, etc.) is split into separate code for Apple vs. Windows.

The same JRiver audio engine is being used for the Apple and Windows versions, so even the earliest versions will play your audio files with their fullest quality intact.

As a very long time Windows MC user, but one who has recently moved to Mac in the lounge connected to some expensive DAC kit, the ability to play Hi Res audio from my NAS is a dream come true.  I know there are other ways to stream but this is my chosen path for the time being.  I successfully had MC running under a duel boot option, but running and paying for a copy of Windows seemed a bridge too far for me.

I guess as I currently use the windows version against a mapped drive to the NAS i'll need to fiddle with something to get the Mac version to see the files.

Ideally I'd like to be able to restore the MC backup into the Mac version.  Thus as I add music to the windows version I can keep the Mac version up to date.

Stupid question, but might I be able to use JRemote, or would that be someway off?

Still another early adopter ready to purchase.

I love the Mac mini as a HTC, and I love JRiver on Windows. Audio is my main goal, though if I could replace various video players that would be great.

We'll first announce it on our forum and in this thread.  Be prepared for it to be a little rough in the first two or three months.  We'll put it out builds every week or so to fix problems and improve the experience.
