Windows 8 AppHangB1 with MC17 & MC18!
« on: October 28, 2012, 11:18:36 am »

There seems to be a windows 8 issue: Two zones, if I switch from one zone to the other and press several times the next button, switch back to the other zone and press several times the next button mc crashes everytime. This is with 2 different Windows 8 installation the same, even with a vmware Win 8 installation and even the same with MC 17 and MC 18:

What types of zones are you controlling?

Do you mean what kind of files are running through the zones? Audio and Pictures.

Still having this issue pending: Switching zones crashes MC17 & MC18 on Windows 8. Sometimes it crashes just switching the zones only!

Issue is still not solved. I did a complete new windows 8 installation on a vmware machine and even in protected mode(!!) MC17 & MC18 crashes if you switch the zones and click on some items. So I did everything from driver updates to disable unneceassary hardware. I run out of ideas and as an act despiration I installed MC16. And now guess what: This version is working without any problems! I would be very happy if anybody could give me a hint.

No, I used vmware now only for testing because I have the same issue with a standard Windows 8 installation.

What are the zones?  DLNA devices?  Or ...

At the end the zones are dlna devices. Under suspicion that it could be something with networking or plugins everything has been turned off. For testing I installed MC17 & + MC18 without any feature than pictures, installed some zones and let run a slideshow through 3 zones. Switching than the zones and doing some mouse clicks i.e. to choose another start picture it crashes sooner or later with an apphangB1. I tried also different hard drives with the same result. Again with Windows 7 no issues at all, with Windows 8 it crashes steadily. I tried it with the same drivers than with Windows 7 and also with new Windows 8 drivers with the same result.

That seems like a driver problem.  Video or network perhaps.

If you haven't done so, it might be useful to check the manufacturer's support pages.  The drivers there may be different.

The "Weird Problems" thread linked in my signature might provide other ideas.

Windows 7 and Windows 8 drivers have been used. And windows protected mode shows the same error. Anyway why is MC16 working with any problem?

Some DLNA calls, like Play / Next, happen on the main thread of Media Center.

This means if the device is slow, the program will be stuck until it finishes or times out.

If you push a DLNA device hard by sending lots of next commands in a row, etc. the device itself may freeze.

Thanks for your answers. But in my opinion dlna directs not to the right direction. Everything is switched off than pictures. No network, no plugs, nothing. Than I point for testing not with a dlna device to mc, I just do some mouse clicks on the application itself. It happens in windows protected mode the same way than in normal mode. This should exclude the driver question besides that every available driver combination with the latest and also whql drivers has been tested. MC16 is working perfect, MC17 & MC18 crashes with an apphangB1. Many thanks for your advice!

Turn off Media Network and Podcasting in Options > General > Features.

Disable auto-import in Options > Library & Folders.

Does any of that make a difference?

Unfortunately the same. Auto-Import is completely off. In features the only feature that is turned on is image support. Now I tested it with audio files only and this is working without any problems. Then I added a zone with images and this is working also. Then I added a second zone with images and the app hangs. The app hangs if 2 zones with images are set and you switch between them.

Are you saying it only hangs when you play images in two zones at once?

I installed now Windows 8 on a completely other machine without any other 3th software. Installed MC18.0.94 and loaded 200 pictures. Installed 2 zones, let run both zones, switched between the zones, choose another start picture, played the zone again, switched to the other zone, double clicked on a picture and the app crashed apphangB1. I can't believe that I'm the only one with this problem. Please check.

I'm not able to reproduce this.

I have images playing in a couple zones at once now.  I can even detach the display and watch both slideshows at once.

Have you tried the latest Media Center (18.0.94)?

Is it possible your video driver doesn't like having two 3d devices created at once?  You mentioned VMWare, and it can be a little flaky with regards to 3d acceleration (which image playback uses).  You might try updating drivers.

Anyone else seeing this?

I really appreciate your support! Unfortunately I only can repeat what I mentioned already: 3 x Windows 8 installation. 1 on a VMware - which is only used for testing-, the other two on physically total different machines. Tried in protected mode also, tried several different video drivers, tried without any other feature than pictures, tried also with the latest 18.0.94, MC16 works just fine, MC 17 & MC 18 hangs after a while steadily. No plug-ins are used, juts the standard MC installation. Running just 2 zones with approx. 200 pictures, let 1 zone run with a slideshow, switch to the other zone, choose a start picture, let this zone run, go back to the other zone, choose another start picture there and if I'm doing that 2-5 times the app hangs steadily.

Could you use Help > Logging to get a hang log, then mail it to logs at jriver dot com?  Please include a link to this thread.

Thank you.

Thanks for the logs.  I'm still not having any luck reproducing this.

I've had four image slideshows playing at once in detached display, all on my second monitor.  They've been running nicely for 30 minutes.  Manually switching images works too.

Earlier in the thread you mentioned DLNA.  For testing, please disconnect any DLNA zones to make sure it's not related.

Also, the log you sent has an abbreviated system info.  Is this from a VMWare environment?

If anybody else would be willing to test and report results, I'd appreciate it.

I would test but only have the ability to display on 2 displays at once and my Intel 3000 HD video isn't really all that wonderful.

Will see what I can do when I get home.

Running Win 8 on my setup.

I configured a new Zone, put the screen on my second monitor and have had it running now for about 15 minutes. No problems. On my other zone, I'm playing music with no problems.

One thing I did find out is that JRiver doesn't seem to like the CR2 files from my Canon 1Dx camera. Renders everything in pink, and rending is... glacial. To the point where it shows the "loading" circle in Windows 8 and reports as Not Responding in Task Manager, then it displays the image and when it goes to load the next image... another long pause. Music continued to play with no hiccups, so I can only imagine JRiver doesn't like RAW images from my camera.

Switched to a bunch of JPGs instead, no stalls or anything else.

And no, I don't really care about CR2 playback from JRiver. If I want a slide show, I'll create JPGs from my RAW files.

And I was pressing Next - Next -Next quite furiously in each zone.

Sure thing.

I'm using a Lenovo T410 with a fresh Win 8 install (originally upgraded, thought it was poop and then nuked it and started over).

It's an i5, don't recall the proc speed at the moment and I'm not home to check.

It's using the HD3000 video built into the processor (which is poop).

I have 8 GB RAM.

Win 8, 64 bit professional. Default region/language for US/English.

My external monitor is a Dell U2410. Sound is played through my E-Mu 0204 (USB DAC). The USB DAC is connected directly to the USB port on the laptop as otherwise the sound skips and stutters.

Is that enough or something else more specific you are looking for?

Thanks slerch666! I'm using the same graphic card on one machine. With this it takes some active mouse clicks, that MC will hang. My other I7 machine doesn't need mouse clicks at all, it hangs during the slideshow without any interaction. So I don't know what's going on here and still can't believe that I'm the only one with this problem because the same behavior appears with MC 17 & MC18 and on Windows 8 only. MC 16 works without any problem so if I switch to Windows 8 I have to stay on MC16  :(

Are you using any "special" software?  Registry cleaner, for example.  Try the "Weird Problems" thread for ideas.

What else do the machines have in common?

Can you simplify your network?

What I did is a standard Windows 8 installation without any attached devices like USB or DLNA devices, without any additional software. Installed MC 18, activated as only feature image support, loaded 200 pictures, installed 2 zones, played with the 2 zones and MC crashes steadily. As mentioned already it happens also in Windows protected mode.

I spent many hours the last days with trying different hardware settings including graphic card changes. The result is always the same. Today I had the opportunity to reproduce the error with a new off the shelf HP notebook. I downloaded the MCC trial version, installed it and put 25 photos in it. Then I started the slideshows. Same result! I recorded the session and send the video to your logs mail account. I really hope for your further support here.

Thanks for the video.

Would you be willing to try the latest build?

We changed the internals of the image playback engine to support touch-friendly image flicking.  It's possible this might change the behavior.

I'm also testing the same configuration I saw in the video.  So far it's working, but I'll let it go a while longer and report if I see the same problem.

What can I say: That changed a lot!! No apphangs at all! Just one small thing now, if you click on an image in the list to go somewhere else in the playlist it reloads the previous picture again and then shows the picture after the new clicked image. Anyway, thanks Matt!!

The double-click plays wrong image thing will be fixed next build.

Unfortuneately there is an apphang issue left within the theater view: Watch a movie - press backspace, MC crashes everytime when it should render the movie pictures.

We've heard this from one other user and I saw it myself on my dad's HTPC.

But I haven't been able to reproduce it on any development machines :(

I'm wondering if it's related to the video hardware and/or driver.

I have to say my gladness was too early. Apphang is still there with 4 or more zones. I've send you 2 videos today, the 1st recorded within a Windows 7, the other with Windows 8. The same portable installation, same library, same hardware etc. As you can see in Win 7 the flow between the slides is much more fluent. In Windows 8 it's getting slower and slower and after 2 minutes it hangs.
Regarding your post concerning the display drivers I have to repeat me again: The issue is there with several different hardware. The mentioned laptop was running a nvidia chipset, the videos today come from a machine with amd cards, lately I installed several driver versions, even the basic wdm microsoft drivers and EVEN in protected mode. The issue is always the same. The question is what has changed from Win 7 to Win 8 regarding the issue?

Another Windows 8 related Problem if you run video's in 2 zones and you pause one zone, the other zone is paused also. If you try now to start the other zone this could work but most of the time the app crashes.
Any ideas to my sent Videos?
