i have had a good search but cant find the answer
I have an AMB Y2 DAC and trying to set the 24 bit on J river, but it keeps recommending that i use 16 bit (which works fine)

if this is the only way, then that is fine, but want to make sure that I am getting 100% best quality.

I am using USB cable as the connection WASAPI Event and windows 7 (laptop is only 12 months old)

think i might be being stupid, all my music is from a CD rip, so that would be limited to 16 bit, would it not??

thanks for that, tried that one, I just downloaded a 24 bit song, and still doesn't work, what am I doing wrong.

just tried it through windows media player/and DAC, which works fine. must be doing something silly.

Start in Windows > Sound > Properties > Advanced > Default Format.  See if you can select 24-bit or 32-bit and play a test tone.

If neither is possible, it means your DAC only accepts 16-bit input.

WMP is always playing through the Windows mixer, so is using whatever format you see in 'Default Format' above.  Media Center can do this too (pick DirectSound output, for example).  However, you'll get better quality using a direct connection like WASAPI - Event Style or ASIO.

you are quite right, only sees 16 bit, thats annoying as it is a 24/96khz DAC so it says (kit)

Is there an ASIO driver by chance?  If so, give that a shot.  The ASIO driver is often better than the WDM driver.

just found this on the AMB forum website.

 I know playback fails if I set the bitrate beyond that which the DAC supports. I think the y2 supports a maximum bit rate of 16 bits via USB (which the y2 dac then upsamples to 24bit).
