Suddenly MC keeps crashing for me. I already reinstalled (without uninstalling) and restarted my PC. I didn't change anything important since the last good run of MC. Only things I did:
  • add a video file to playing now (without playing)
  • add two wave files to playing now (without playing)

After seeing the incomplete shutdown dialog a few times a chose to take all action without success. Deleting my library folder also had no success. MC crashes after round about five seconds without touching anything. I have to use the task manger to kill it. Win8 marks MC as "inaktiv" when crashed.

The last lines of the log file are always the same.

The log doesn't really show the program getting stuck on anything in the main thread.

It's sticking around the time of handheld detection, so that might be related.

You could try renaming this registry key (regedit) and see if it helps:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 18\Portable Devices

Didn't change anything.

Does it help to offer a file process log? I don't know, what I could do to make MC run again...

Does it make a difference if you eject all your CD/DVD/BD drives?

Did something else change on your system?

I removed my Laptop from my dockingstation. So all external devices (1 external soundcard, 2 external Monitors, external HDD) are disconnected. I completely removed my DVD-ROM drive physically.

Still crashing after start.

Before I was using MC in my docking station and without it. Last run was outside the station, I'm not absolutly sure, but I believe the first crash was after trying to play a video without Internet connection. The message of missing LAV-splitter appeared. No idea, if there is a connection.

Nothing else changed. I even didn't use my PC in between except for watching the video in GOM Player, checking mails via outlook and browsing web via Opera. No updates, no new programs, no new hardware. No idea.

What a sad day  :(

... I believe the first crash was after trying to play a video without Internet connection. The message of missing LAV-splitter appeared. No idea, if there is a connection.
A new install may need to download a new LAV and madVR, and it's possible there's a problem if that happens when there is no Internet connection.  If you're desperate, uninstall MC, removing registry entries, then reinstall with an Internet connection.

I uninstalled as you said with removing all registry entries. Restarted. Then reinstalled with internet connection. Stays the same.

Finally found it. Bluetooth. I recently added a device there, but didn't think of this (Shame on me!!). After removing this Device from the list of known Devices in Windows8 (an Nokia X03 feature phone), MC works again. I couldn't test, what happens when I connect the phone again, because it was not mine.

Sorry for stealing your time...

Mine also crashes but I never added a device.  Did you add a phone or was this on by default.  I got so tired of the crashing I just uninstalled.  MC17 doesn't have any devices and no issues there.

I added the phone using standard windows tools. I send two files to the phone using windows explorer. I didn't use the phone in MC and didn't add it intentionally. I'm not sure if MC was running when I connected the phone. I don't know if MC added the device itself.

But I think it doesn't matter if I added the device to MC, because also deleting the registry key mentioned by Matt (which removes all devices in MC) didn't solve the problem. Looks as if MC has some problems with my bluetooth adapter or the Nokia X03. I still have one other phone in my known blutooth devices list in windows. This one doesn't cause any problems in MC. It's an android phone.

If you have Windows9, you may actually stolen time from the Universe.
