Explicit image thumbnail for folder!?
« on: December 17, 2012, 07:24:09 pm »

I am a new user to the Media Center for the past two months and loving the sound quality. I have an unraid server that feeds in the content. While I am still understanding how to customize the folder names and sorting, I browse by Video>Disk and the respective folder share. I have the following folder shares - Classical, MusicVideos and Movies. I have been puzzled about how the software pulls in the images for the folders, usually they are okay and interesting but frustrating at times. Today, it got on my nerves.

I was browsing for a video music with my wife and toddler looking on and when I browsed to Video>Disk, there was an explicit adult picture as a thumbnail for MusicVideos folder. Glad it was just my family and not a visitor who were watching the screen. How are these images pulled in from internet?   I do not have porn in my server. I also noticed that if you have a "sample" video file in a movie folder, the software names it as "Semen". Unless I rename or delete the sample files, they are named as Semen by default. What's up with these images and names? Has anyone else experienced this and how to get rid of them? Needless to say, I am a bit annoyed by this experience.

EDIT: I have been trying to figure out what file or folder name was contributing to this. I browsed all the 50 or so sub-folders and none of them have this adult picture as a thumbnail. I have stepped through some folders but continuing to do an exhaustive file search to see whether any thumbnail matches the root folder thumbnail.

I assure you it's not Media Center downloading explicit sidecar images or giving explicit names to your files.

It sounds to me like you have a virus.  I would do a system scan with a good virus checker.

Good luck.

Thanks for the assurance, have been puzzled for awhile. Have Kaspersky and Malwarebytes on the system, will check thoroughly again.

Is there a way for me to find out from where (url or file) MCC 18 is pulling in that thumbnail image for the folder?

You can look at the 'Image File' column (or Action Window > Tag) to see where Media Center is looking for an image.

Thanks.

sent you a PM regarding the email and license. Thanks for the quick response, searching for the image thumbnail.

Also, what email address did you purchase under?  I couldn't find your license.

Thanks for the purchase.  I just wanted to make sure you didn't have a "bad" version that came bundled with a virus.

I quit MC18 to start a scan. When I restarted MC18, that image isn't there anymore. I am puzzled, I didn't delete or change anything but it just went away. I am afraid it may come up again unless I find the root source. I will be scanning this night to see whether something comes up. This is a new HTPC I built during the last two months, so I am apprehensive about virus but I am not taking chances.

However, the cover art for some movies which I am yet to delete the "sample" files in their respective folders are still named as "Semen". Other than deleting the sample files for every folder, is there a batch mode I can execute to get rid of the Semen names?

Search for the word and delete what you find.  I wonder if it was a typo.  It isn't something MC would do.

I searched for the word and found no results.

The Semen name of the movie is being pulled in by MC18, a spanish movie. I searched to find the exact picture (url below from imdb). The movie name is Semen, a love sample (2012) - a translation artifact of my mis-understanding. Nevertheless, MC18 looks for a *sample* in the movie folder and pulls in this cover art automatically. Ideally I would guess MC18 should be able to look for the cover art based on folder name or at least the largest file in the folder.

Here is the folder art I keep seeing again and again in my library.
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm4015952896/tt0416214

This for a fact is pulled in by MC18 and has to be fixed.

I ran both Kaspersky and Malwarebytes overnight using a full/deep scan option. Both of them turned up negative. I am still not discounting the fact that there could be a virus in this new system but I think the chances are fairly slim.

Given what I have seen with the cover art being pulled based on a file name like abcd_sample.avi has a cover art of "Semen, a love sample" from imdb I think there is a good possibility MC18 was pulling in some random picture that resembled an explicit adult image.

Now my question is, how can I modify the online sources and languages MC18 uses for covert art from the default setting?

I quit MC18 to start a scan. When I restarted MC18, that image isn't there anymore. I am puzzled, I didn't delete or change anything but it just went away. If you have a single movie you've named 'Semen', we will use that same name for any sidecar files.  This seems reasonable.  And if we display an online slideshow in Theater View (configurable in Options > Theater View > Theme), you might get weird results.

Reading your earlier posts, I got the impression something scarier was happening, like every movie had that name.  If it's just one movie, I think you could just clean that one name up and be done.

Matt - It wasn't all the movies but about 20% of my initial movie sets, which was about 40 movie thumbnails. Since I have moved to using MC18 as my primary media viewer, fixing this was important. Once I identified the source of the problem I deleted all the sample files in the movie folder and this got rid of the 'unfriendly' name. I know how to fix this manually - by either deleting all sample.avi files in the respective folders or renaming them. I deleted the sample video files. What I am trying to get regarding this is, MC18 should be ideally using the folder name as the primary source for pulling in tag details and not the smaller file inside this movie folder.

My primary question on this post still remains a mystery. I do not know where the weird cover art for the main folder was pulled in. How is the cover art for a folder decided? I was hoping it was based on the thumbnail of a random sub-folder or file but its not in my case. The thumbnail covert art I am chasing after does not belong to any sub-folders or files as displayed by MC18.

What was in the 'Image File' field in Media Center?  This is the file we're using for cover art.

As for what actually downloaded the file, are you sure it was Media Center?  You can manually download movie art using 'Get Movie & TV Info'.

Matt, the way I see it, many downloaded or self-ripped movies come with a 'sample' file. If Carnac thinks the [name] of this file is Sample, then this is where the trouble starts. I just took a random movie and did a get movie info request. If you change the name of the movie in the dialog box to "Sample", the first tmdb hit is indeed, Semen - a Love Sample.
So this might affect all the sample files, especially if they are just named 'sample'. Then one might see all the sample files renamed to Semen{ - a love sample}.

[Edit: The two replies above were posted while I was typing this]

Wanted to give a quick update on this issue.

I found the source of the images and they were due to a file name and MC18 was pulling the image from a steamy scene movie. This is due to my collection of Indian (south asian) movies and MC18 looking for an Indian name in IMDB. 80% of the time MC18 populates with the correct information except for the remaining 20% which amounts to a substantial number of files (I have few hundred movies in my collection). However, this is not MC18's fault.

Another issue which I have confirmed and also another user (fitbrit, above post) in this thread is that if MC18 finds a sample file in a movie folder which has a naming convention of "sample-xxyy.avi", it pulls in the covert art and tag information corresponding to a Spanish movie "Semen - A Love Sample (2012)". The smaller file size of the sample and the movie folder name is ignored by MC18. This NEEDS to be corrected and in my opinion is a bug.

JimH, Matt and fitbrit - thanks for your prompt help and suggestions.

Happy holidays!

I agree.
