So I am almost done ripping all my DVD's to my NAS, but I have noticed that on some DVD's the file size ends up being huge. For example, I ripped Cars 2 and it came out to 75 gigs! I am using DVD Decrypter. I would like to manage filesize better to not fill up the NAS so quickly, but I still want full quality.

Any advise?

You must mean 7.5 Gigs.
Something went seriously wrong if its 75.

A free program called DVDShrink can remove previews and languages you don't care about.
It works on discs as well as dvds that are already ripped to a hard drive.
I don't think its been upgraded for years, but it works fine.

Slysoft makes a similar program called clone dvd

These are the only 2 i know of but im sure there are a lot more.

No, really, 75 Gig. I just did Toy Story 3 and it came out to be 67 gig.  ?

I looked at VidCoder, that does not handle discs with encryption. It points to DVDFAB for those, and I check it out but somehow confused myself more......

Whats the easiest way to rip an encrypted dvd to Video_TS these days for free?

A dvd can only hold around 9 gigs.
4.7 on each of the 2 layers.

So something is going wrong.

The easiest way to rip by installing anydvd

Once installed you can rip with JRiver or just with anydvd.

Both take about 3 clicks and 5-10 minutes to finish.

If you want to rip Bluray you will need anydvdHD

anydvd isn't free but it will pay for itself with the 90 percent hard disc space you will save.

Some DVDs corrupt the file table (FAT?) details on the disc to try and prevent ripping/copying.  I have a couple that report disc sizes of ~75Gb. Some ripping software fail on these discs because they get in an endless loop copying non-existent data from the disc because the FAT tells the filesystem it's there. It doesn't affect playback.

I don't know which free software works for these discs though.

This sounds like what's possibly happening here, because in most cases my folder sizes are less than 7 gig. I know it doesnt affect playback....but it really chews up drive space!

I looked at anydvdHD, I might try that. I did also successfully use DVDFAB, just ripped the movie and the file size was less than 2 gig for Video_TS, a little over 2 gig for iso, but not sure I want to go the iso route.

Looks like I need to pick a new software and re-rip the collection again...

Just thought I would follow up... The quality of the rip from DVDFAB was poor at best, and that was a rip to TS. I'll try anyDVD next...
