JRiver 17.0.182 Still Hangs Even With New PC
« on: February 17, 2013, 11:17:11 am »

JRiver would sporadically hang with my previous Vista PC. Music would stop playing, and the Player Bar stopped moving.
Hit the stop button, either nothing happens or JRiver grays out.
Sometimes I can't close JRiver except via Task Manager as the Processes Tab shows the Media Center 17.exe file is still running.
It seems as though Windows won't let JRiver close.
Just did a fresh install on my new Win 7 PC, and it still happens.
It can happen after 15 minutes or 10 hours. No rhyme or reason as far as I can see.
8gb memory, no anti-virus, and services are pared down. No auto import for JRiver Library.
Since this is a brand new PC, dedicated to 2 channel audio, am I safe to assume that the problem lies either in JRiver or my library?
A copy of the latest log was just sent to JRiver.
Thanks.

17.0.189 is the last version of MC17.  It's on the wiki in the Old Versions topic.

Uninstall any third party plugins.  Look at the topic called "Stability" in my signature.

Try 17.0.189.  We don't need a log since development of MC has ended.  But try the latest.

Can you tell a bit more about the system? Specs, audio card, etc?
Are the files local or from a NAS/Network share?
What kind of files are you playing?
How big is the library (number of files)?
Did you keep track of on which files it stopped? Did you try playing those files again after a restart?

Maybe you said it, but what are you playing to?  The audio device?

Are the files local or in a different location?

Just play audio. All files are located locally on an internal drive which just holds the music.
The OS and programs are on a separate internal SSD.

Built in audio is the on the AS ROCK H77 PRO4-M/M/ASR (Intel) / A75 (AMD) mini-itx motherboard.
The only specific info I have is:

- Supports THX TruStudio™
Please let me know if there is any more specific information I can get.

Interesting.

So the files are local, are they on an internal drive or USB drive?

Are you using the analog output to (for example) PC speakers or a line in on a amp/receiver?

Did you keep track of the files on which it stopped playing and have you tried to replay a file on which it hung after a restart? If you haven't done this, I suggest you try these.

All the files are on an internal drive.
They  output via USB. I've tried all the USB ports, both 2.0 and 3.0 with the same results.
I've also tried different USB cables.
I've tried replaying the "hung" files, and they replay fine.
I created a new folder with 10 flac albums, and pointed JR to only that album.
I deleted the old library, a new library was created of just the 10 albums.
Set JRiver to play all, went to sleep, and this morning it was frozen again.

Try a different output mode to a different audio device if you can.

If you're using ASIO, for example, try DirectSound.

If you have an internal sound device, try it.

In this way, you can probably identify where the problem is.

In addition to what Jim said, you could check power settings. It may have to do with the a driver for the DAC or USB.

The simplest way is probably to set the profile to high performance under Power Options (Windows Control Panel). After selecting that power plan you can select 'change plan settings' and make sure that turn off display and sleep options are both set to never. Under Advanced,  open Hard disk and USB settings and make sure they are set to Never/Disabled.

You may also want to check if there are newer drivers for your USB controller and the external DAC/soundcard.

I thought that everything was set to Never Turn Off, but I never realized that there was a setting for USB.
I drilled down a bit deeper and found another Hard Drive setting to fix.
After a reboot, I thought that it was fixed.
No hangs, I could easily change tracks without any problems, etc.
About 4 hours later, it froze again.

I have the greatest respect for you guys.
When you factor in the literally millions of different combinations of hardware, software, and users, it's amazing that anything works!

Any other ideas?

Here's the latest:
I disconnected the Dac's USB cable from the computer,. and JRiver ran for 14 hours without a glitch. Of course, there was no audio output, but it did operate fine.
I rebooted, connected the USB Dac, tried both Wasapi Event and Wasapi, JRiver again froze.
As before, JRiver can play for 15 minutes or 4 hours before freezing.
After switching to Direct Sound, JRiver again played without a problem.
I am now trying a different USB Dac with Wasapi Event mode.
I don't know if this is relevant, but after restarting JRiver after a freeze, the first thing that comes up is the screen that asks you to Continue-Evaluate-Enter License, as if JRiver wasn't registered. After a few seconds, this screen disappears, and JRiver starts normally.
This is a registered copy of JRiver.
