Crash reporting
« on: February 22, 2013, 02:24:16 pm »

Hi gang –

How would you like us to report crashes? I just had my first (upon restoring a backup of my main library) and I know I can send it to Apple but I don't know how long that takes to get to you, or even if it does. Maybe an email address to which we can cut'n'paste that crash report text?

If you open Console.app, all your crash logs are there.  But your question remains: do you wish for us to post our crash logs somewhere?

For now, you could just report steps to reproduce a problem.

Logs are probably unnecessary, assuming we can reproduce the problem.

Thank you.

I can't open the downloaded program! Crashes immediately. I'm on 10.6.8 and a thread with a link suggesting a workaround for this OSX is "off limits" to me so I can't read about a possible workaround. So did I purchase a program that will not work on my Mac? CRAP!! I don't want to move up to Mountain Lion on this computer because of an online banking program I use every day that won't work on that OSX.

It should install on 10.6.  The workaround was to set startup to audio.  Any page that formerly used a web engine will cause problems, but audio should work.

Try installing it again and be sure you have downloaded the 139 build.

We will be making changes in the next week or two to try to get it working on 10.6, but it should install now.

I get a crash notice every time I shut down MC.  And the only I'm able to shut down is by right clicking on the dock icon & selecting shut down from the context menu.  Command + Q does not work to shut it down

I'm on 10.6.8, what does 'set startup to audio' mean?

Thanks.

Thanks for that, but can I change the Tools startup interface options from a pref file or something?
MC does not start up for me, it crashes after the bouncing icon and the spinning beachball :(

The same is true for my white 24" iMac on 10.7.5: crashes immediately after program start.

No luck with my MacMini server (late 2009) on OS 10.6.8, either.

Doesn't crash, can import and do other things, but doesn't play music.
Stops immediately after trying to start to play.
Doesn't matter if mp3 or m4a.

Unfortunately i have no newer Macs to try.

10.6 still doesn't work correctly.

For people running anything above 10.6, it should run.  Can you tell us (again, if needed) the following?

OS version
Machine type
Virus checker
Browser installed

I'm looking for what you might have in common.  Thanks for your help and your patience.  And sorry for the problem.

This is only to report that MC18 for Mac is not opening on 10.7.5 but it is working on 10.8.2.

I want to report a similar behavior, MC18 started, after a while software crashes.
My configuration is a Macbook Pro Retina 15", no virus checker and only Safari installed.

I observed that crash happens only when the option Auto-import (for Media library) is activated. In my case import is frozen at 14563 files even if my server contains more than 25000 files.

Here is how it looks like:

I observed that crash happens only when the option Auto-import (for Media library) is activated. In my case import is frozen at 14563 files even if my server contains more than 25000 files.
That may be the "smoking gun".  Let's hope so.  It would make it easier to find the cause.

Auto Import options are under Tools/Import/Configure Auto Import.  Try turning off individual locations and features to see if you can identify what may be causing the crash.

You may be able to import a single directory at a time, or 1000 files at a time, or ...

Try turning off all but a single file type (mp3, for example).  You can edit a folder and select file types to import.

Jim,

I have first removed all files from the Main Library, then manually imported my complete flac library (26159 files), Auto-import still disabled and I have no crash. So it looks like something goes wrong when the program is watching for a folder and/or with the Auto-import function.

Thanks.  That helps.

Do you remember the path(s) where MC was looking?  In other words, how was auto import set?

Re: Crash reporting

It was on external hard drives.

I did the test with one connected to the USB port and with my NAS:
/Volumes/Verbatim/Ma Musique (USB)
/Volumes/GoFlex Home Public/Musique FLAC/ (NAS)

I have also a crash with 24bits 96KHz flac files, but this is not the right thread, and it needs some more investigation...

I've been doing imports with multiple external drives with no issues at all, excepting only some issues with file name lengths which I think got fixed with the latest release.

I have not tried with USB-2 drives, but USB-3 and Firewire drives seem to work well here, formatted with MacOS or NTFS.

Auto Import options are under Tools/Import/Configure Auto Import.  Try turning off individual locations and features to see if you can identify what may be causing the crash.

This allowed my Mac Mini OSX 10.6.8 to start/run without crashing.  Thanks!

Next up: JRiver for Mac plays 16/44 AIFF files great, same with 24/96 files.  It does not play 24/176 files, however.  All I get is a "spinning ball" freeze up that can only stopped by "force quitting" the program when I play 24/176 files.  Here is the error message on the screen shot...is there an easy setting to account for this?

InfernoSTi,

I had the same problem trying to play 24bit/96KHz flac file on my Video Display. You can go in menu Player -> DSP and change your settings for your 24/176 input file to 16/44.

This is probably due to a temporary lack of capacity of MC18 to properly identify settings of actual playback device.

Jim, can you confirm?

This worked great...thank you, Taz!

In my case, I set 24/176 and 24/192 files to playback at 24/96.  This is under Tools>Options>Audio>DSP & Output Settings.

Then I had to click "OK" on the Options screen to access the DSP screen.  Then I could select the output sample rate.  I had to exit JRiver each time to set the settings before they would be effective.

Now it automatically down samples the higher sample rates to 24/96 output.  Everything plays fine!

Thanks again!

Crashes on startup for me as well; I have read this thread carefully and I can't see any clues as to why. Even tried removing and reinstalling to no effect.

OS X 10.8.2
JR version 18.0.139
No virus checker
Browsers Safari and Firefox

However, this is an ancient imac with a core2duo processor and a mere 4G of memory.

Any external drives?

Try turning off auto import.  Try importing a few files of a single type.

How can you turn off auto import when you can't even open the program? People are telling you that it is crashing immediately upon opening. in my case I click on the icon and it starts to open but never gets completely there.

It seems like the "crash on startup" folks have Core Duo or older processors.

My guess is we're trying to use an SSE 4.1 instruction during JPEG loading and it's crashing.

To allow us to use SSE 4.1 by hand, where we check the CPU and fallback to a slower routine when necessary, we had to turn on SSE 4.1 support in the compiler.  But my guess is that this also told the compiler to use those instructions itself, which we do not want since it will break support for older CPUs.

Yep, me too on the Core Duo, but I'm running 10.8.2 on an iMac.  Have a new iMac coming soon and will try on my 13" retina MBP.  Would like to be able to run it on the Core Duo though, as planning to retire it to permanent music server status.

There is a good chance that 18.0.140 will solve some of these problems.

MC doesn't crash on startup anymore with 18.0.140 on my white MacBook (core2duo, OS 10.7.5).
It imports and works well as far i can see now.
Thanks for the quick fix!

On my MacMini server (OS 10.6.8 ) only the internal sound plays with 18.0.140, my USB soundcard doesn't.

18.0.140 does the business, guys.  10.6.8 Core 2 Duo 2009 Mini.  Plays 24/96 from Firewire OK, too.  I just want to say, really, thanks.  You've made a lot of people very happy.  I've been waiting months for this & I've used Amarra & Pure Music for years.  It's a monumental accomplishment and you should be proud.

140 doesn't crash upon opening but it did crash upon closing. Still a step forward.

18.0.140 crases when editing a field (album for example) after typing return to store.
No editing possible on iMac 24" (core3duo), OS 10.7.5.

What type of files do you have?  FLAC?  MP3?

Try importing a single file type.

Try importing a directory that has just a few files.

If you use any external drives, disconnect them.

I have Aiff and ALAC, all in external drives (USB). I will copy few in local drive and try. Thanks Jim.
