"Run auto-import in background" - how is background defined ?
« on: February 22, 2013, 02:45:03 pm »

For:

Run auto-import in background

How exactly is "background" defined ?

Please be as technical and detailed as possible, thanks.

Glynor gives a nice explanation:

Thanks, that explains how MC18 knows that something needs to be imported.

It doesn't explain how MC18 defines "in background".

For example, will MC18 never run import while audio or video files are playing ?

In other words, I would prefer to leave this option unchecked, unless I can be sure that the code prohibits it from running while either an audio or video file is playing.

It won't run during playback unless something is editing the file system while you're playing.  But since it uses throttling and low thread priorities, it won't matter even if it does run.

There's no reason to turn it off in my opinion, but if it's the sort of thing you're worried about just leave it off and run it manually.  That's why we offer that option.  You can add a 'Run Now' button to the toolbar.

The low thread priorities is probably sufficient.

I  do have the Run Now button, but I find that when I do it that way, it runs for quite a long time.

By the way, when I do that, the "Adding...." counts to some number above 600, but always reports the usual 10 or so files that I have actually added...

I wonder if there are some files that have been marked as bad?

The full details checkbox on the import summary dialog might have some clues.

Or external tagging changes.  I see this when file modification dates have changed, tags have changed, and things like that.  I'm pretty sure it doesn't report this in the Import Log, though I could be wrong.

I've asked that question before as well. I wish MC would update the library with updated tags but all it mentions are "external changes" but the library doesn't reflect the changes. I need to do an Update Library (from tags), then the changes show. So if 'updated for external changes' doesn't update tags then I don't know what it does.
