What playback codecs are expected
« on: February 26, 2013, 07:57:41 pm »

I've been an MC customer since version 7.   I'm thrilled to see a Mac version... (already purchased).
However, 60K+ tracks are in WMA....

Do you plan on having this version either:

a) support WMA playback -or-
b) WMA convert to something like AAC if we must

It may support WMA now.  Did you try?

WMA will not work for a while.

I believe there are reverse-engineered ways to get WMA working outside Windows, but our WMA code from Windows (which uses the official Microsoft components) will certainly not work.  As you might expect, Mac support is not provided by Microsoft.

My opinion is that you'd be better off picking a format that is not closed-source and proprietary, but if you already have a bunch of lossy WMA files (as opposed to lossless WMA) the transition is painful.

Flip4mac is what I've had to use for the occasional WMA needs.

We don't have a native SHN decoder on Windows, but instead use LAV.  This means we won't have SHN support on Mac, at least for the next several months.

I would recommend doing a one time conversion of your SHN files to APE or FLAC.  You'll get better tagging, better compression, and wider format support.

Thanks for helping to ease the transition to Mac + MC
Used converter for easy batch conversion of all to flac.
