New install - crashes when importing
« on: September 30, 2003, 09:11:10 am »

Freshly installed and registered MJ8 on my laptop.  Win2K SP3.

When attempting to import local files into the db, winders says some files have been replaced with older ones and put the sp3 disc in so it can replace them.  I cancel and say keep older one (that MJ8 has intalled) and it (MJ8) pegs the cpu and crashes.

If I cancel the search on startup it all works fine.

Any ideas?

I don't know.  It could be a Windows problem.  Could you try updating your OS?  IE/Tools/Windows Update should work.

I know that Windows can automatically replace system files under some circumstances, and it sounds like this could be happening.  Try a google search to see what you can find.

What do the machines have in common?

If you've used a download manager, disable it and download again.

Hi Jim

About the only thing that they have in common is me.  One is a Win2k Laptop, P-4 2GHz Dell and the other is a WinXP Desktop, Althlon 1.2 GHz.

Can I just re-install overtop or should I uninstall first?  Will the latter require a renewal?

Thanks

You can uninstall and reinstall without affecting the license, but you will lose your playlists unless you back them up and restore.

But there may be something else affecting this.  Virus checker, etc.

Did you try updating Windows?

Did you try a google search?

I don't think this is an issue with our software.

You might also want to try Media Center 9.

Thanks Jim

It could be the Virus Software, although they're different on each machine.  I'll try tonight, hopefully my interenet is back up, its been down for 2 days now...

I should just move up to MC9.  Does it allow the same web remote type of control?  This is paramount as that is how I control my whole house audio.

Thanks in advance,

Wes

interesting... having a similar problem on my machine:

laptop w2k sp2, with:
winamp2 & 3; wmedia 8; cdrwin for ripping and burning cds

installed mj8, started importing my mp3s, and for some reason it just hangs half-way thru, eats 100% processor. Have to kill the process in task manager.

when i start up mj again, some of the imported files are there. tried doing it folder by folder, but still hangs sometimes.

also crashed once when trying to update a batch of id tags???

have reinstalled once already (with AV disabled), but nothing changed.

any tips would be appreciated!

Try importing just a few files, then a few more.  Just to see if there is a file that is causing problems.
