You have to have DSP studio set to 6 channels if you want 5.1 over HDMI.

I don't see 6 channels in dsp studio; they're all .1 channels

You should see an option list like attached. and you would tend to either use:
- Source # of Channels (if you plan to let your AVR do the mixing) or
- Set it to the config that you have, eg 5.1

When I try anything above 2 channels i get incompatible format. I want jriver to do all the processing.

Go into Windows --> Start --> Control Panel --> Sound and have a look at the Properties and Configuration of your Default Audio Device.  Is it setup for 5.1?  If it only shows it support 2.0 you may need to install the latest GPU Drivers for your graphics card from the mfr, AMD, NVidia, Intel directly as the std windows ones only puts a 2.0 compatible sound driver on.

Windows 8 does not support radeon 4670. I will be installing win 7 again.

You'll also want to find a "HD audio" driver that specifically will send your audio out HDMI, which will be probably associated with your graphics chipset. Configure MC18 audio for HDMI output and 'not to bitstream'

HTH :)
