Hi Zev,

You must be thinking of MPC formerly known as mpeg plus and now Musepack.

With this format and MJ you can burn a data CD or an audio CD.
If you have a data CD full of mpc tracks you can certainly convert it to mp3
(again with MJ convert utility) I do it pretty often to feed my mp3 portable player.
As for "on the fly" burning I don't catch what you mean ?

In any case when using with mpc be sure to use the latest mpc plugin now in MJ8 distribution.

Well, Je ne suis pas sur d'avoir repondu a toutes tes questions !

On the fly means convert and burn at the same time. Not first to wav and after to redbook
I am starting again with shn.Because it is only live music from "jam bands" with 10 minutes |PLS| songs,i feel that mp3 is not the best.APE is a no way for 2 raisons.Room if i keep it on my computer. And i will not have all the concert on one cd.With MPC,i think yes
The part about burning was for 2 friends and my brother in France. And they have MusicMatch or Real and easycd creator
I had a try to mp3 pro.Not bad.A little weak on bass maybe,but a very live sound

Merci et bonne nuit

On the fly.

I think MJ always converts to wav and then to the new format that you want.

It may look like on the fly - but i dont think it is.

So decoding - (temp wav file)

encoding  - (new format)

what is MJ doing when it decodes and then encodes.

hmmmm....

Is "Rip and encode simultaneously" checked under settings/options/encoding?

Hello Zev,

If you want to pack more than 2 hours and a half of good music on a single CD
with gapless playback (important for live music) then MPC is certainly a good choice.
I usually store between 8 and 9 hours of mpc --xtreme music on a 700 MB CDR.
for less than 2 1/2 hours I'd go APE.

As for compatibility, there's no problem burning mpc files with Easy CD creator or Nero
they're just regular data files. Playing mpc files is more tricky as Musicmatch and real
can't play them but Winamp and MJ (bien sur) can !

Anyway don't you think you should tell your brother and friends about MediaJukebox Next Page

Allez, courage et bonne journée !

I saw your last post only now.
If my brother and my 2 friends had a better english than the 5 words they know,i would have buy each of them one version of MediaJukebox.Like this they would have listen to Music01,and i will made cds "on order",according to what they want.I would have save time to rip,to go to post office  and postage, making the $75 cheap.BUT.........................
If they can burn redbook cd with Easycd creator, that is fine. They have kids,so they have WinAmp with 5000 skins and 5000 plugin on they computer. To get the pluging not a problem

Concerning the gapless,is it only from a gapless cd?I got the shn one song by one song. After this i convert to wav.I still have one song by one.Can i do a gapless MPCcd ?
Wich APE settings i need to be able to put 2 hours and a half on one cd? In fact a double cd on one
Last I understand that you can play MPC only from your computer?

JOYEUSE PAQUES

Update
Got the plugin, set at extreme.Sound quite good and easy to  convert.Do i need to do more?
If i want to compare with mp3 ,i have to convert to 128kps?Or another format? Not VRB

Zevele,

Concerning gapless: yes it's when you encode a gapless CD (like a concert).
I don't know about shn files but I think that If you can get gapless wav files
from them then you can get gapless mpc encoding.

To pack 2hours 1/2 of APE on one CD there is no particular setting.
Of course you can use the high setting that'll help. But these 2 hours1/2
is an average from my experience. APE compression vary very much with the music
you encode. I have songs that encode at 1100 kbps and others at less than 600 kbps !!
Some double CDS will not fit on a single APE encoded CD some others will !

Yes, today the only way to play MPC, AFAIK, is on a PC using MJ, Winamp or some other
players like xmms if you are a linuxian. No portable hardware will play them so far.

If you are encoding MPC using the xtreme profile then you will hardly get anything better
using insane unless you have a very sensitive hearing !
with xtreme I get an average bitrate around 200 kbps.
Comparing mpc with mp3 is tricky since the two encoders use different algorithms and
are not designed for the same purpose. mp3 designed for low bitrate and streaming, mpc
was designed for bitrates around 160 kbps. Also mpc is pure VBR, that is the encoder can
use any bitrate (modulo 1kbps) to encode each frame, there is no CBR mpc.
So if you really want to compare both you sould encode your mp3 in VBR using a command
line like --r3mix or --alt-preset standard wich will give you something in the same bitrates
as mpc --standard (around 170 kbps).
But at those bitrates, it will be hard to tell the difference (with my hearing at least !)
But well, you can try your luck !

Hope I answered some of your questions !

Bye for now and have a nice week !

Thank you
To compare to mp3 was just "to have a look",not to put MPC on trial
I have a lot of songs at 10|PLS| minutes,so for all this part of my library i will use MPC extreme
The fact that you can burn them with EasycdCreator  means i do not need to convert to rip cds fo France. So this is great
I will stick with mp3 for other music for many raisons.I got songs from Emusic ,p2p in mp3.Best to keep them, not to convert. And i have a discman cd/mp3,a DVD who plays mp3
I hoppe that soon i will have a minidisc player who plays mp3.There is one in Europe now.Cheap[around 1000 francs francais],but only lecteur
Maybe the next Sony will read the mp3.I have a Sony minidisc and i just do not understand why people do not care about such a thing. It is great.really
Have look at the pictures from Paris, they are great

You gave answers to all my ?. So merci beaucoup!

But i have 2 more?
Can you stream MPC on Music01? I think no
Can you share MPC on p2p softwares?

Hi,

No, I don't think you can stream mpc on Music01.
As for p2p why not ? But I can't really tell you.
You know, I'm not really a virtuoso with downloading/xchanging music files (56k modem at home !),
but maybe there are some p2p services for mpc. Maybe Trelane or Xstatic will know ?

En attendant Take Care / fais gaffes a Toi,

Encore une question
I have problem with the Mpc pluging in 8.Can i use the "original"encoder as an eternal encoder with 8 or do i have to use 7 for it?
I had a look at the posts about MPC and wrotte down the settings,so i do not need help at this level
The problem i have is the same than others on this forum, not all songs are rip until the end.Rip&encode simultaneously or not the same
Bonne reprise demain matin

zevele, yes you can use the original mpc encoder as an external encoder. no problem.

They will fix the built in encoder at some point, until then the solution is to encode to mpc with
the external.
