I clicked around all over and couldn't find this specific problem anywhere, so I hope it wasn't right under my nose and I missed it.
I have just begun using a virgin hp Elitebook running Windows 7 Pro.
I'm pretty sure MC18 was the first (and only) version I've installed on this machine.
At first, it would freeze suddenly whether I was doing anything or not, but I was getting, at first, a few hours of use first, then that window dwindled until now it freezes less than a minute after starting. I've reinstalled MC, disabled (but not uninstalled) Eset Nod32 antivirus; no difference.
The only information I have is this Windows error:

I just now spotted the "LAVAudio"  thing but it's not information that I know how to make use of.
I really appreciate any help I can get with this as my sanity depends on having music at work. I've gotten alot of help from here in the past without even having to post, so I already know you guys rock. Sorry if this is unnecessarily long-winded. Thanks again.

You should update to the latest version, 18.0.212, available from the top of this board.

It's kinda ridiculous that that didn't occur to me.
However, while it did buy me a few minutes, it did just freeze again. I left it playing, was not using the machine, and it froze.

Update: uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, and it froze again.

That's a middle of the road machine.  Not bad.

What are you doing when it happens?  What kind of files?

It doesn't appear to matter what I'm doing. Sometimes nothing. Several times I've just started a playlist and walked away.
Files; well, it's almost entirely mp3s, but a very large number of them.
Last time it crashed, I had configured auto-import, and as soon as it had finished with thumbnails, and was about to begin analyzing the audio, is when it froze, if that means anything.
OK, that very thing just happened again. Maybe if I delete libraries (I have 3 that I'm trying to tweak to my liking)??
I'll take another, maybe closer, look at the wiki.

Unplug any devices you can. 

It could be a hardware problem.

The only things I have plugged in are the external drive that my music is located on (which my machine has indeed "lost" a few times), and a transmitter for a mouse.
Is it possible one of those is the culprit? Actually, I'm pretty sick of having problems with external storage on all my machines after like, a few lousy months of buying them (the drives). But that's another matter....

I had er running for like an hour or more, had a little cautious optimism going on there. Then it crashed again, and now it's back to every few seconds.
I tried switching to IE, no difference. I appreciate the suggestion.
I've been scouring the wiki and whatever else I can think of. Uninstalled a piece of recording software I had (the only recent change to the system I could think of); no joy yet.

Any suggestions as to how someone of limited savvy such as myself might zero in on that?
It's analyzing audio as we speak, so that's an improvement.
Did I read somewhere on here years ago that having duplicate files on 2 different drives, in the same library, could cause problems? I have a library based on my music on an external drive, which includes a duplicate of that whole directory on C drive, and another library that's the reverse of that. I've just deleted all the (eg) "D:\" files from the "C:\" library from that library, and vice versa with the other library. Would I be out to lunch to think that might make a difference? Did that even make sense?

When a USB drive starts going bad, it can cause all sorts of odd problems.  I had an issue with one a number of years ago that would cause MC to hang during syncs.  I eventually realized the drive was dropping off.  The problem went away when the drive found a better home in the dumpster.

Well, on the one hand I hope it's not that, because it means shelling out for yet another drive. On the other hand, it would be nice to find out it was, because I'd be done searching for clues.
It's definitely worth checking out, anyway.

Also check the Windows Event Viewer. That's how I found a problem with Microsoft Security Essentials (which a reinstall fixed) that was randomly crashing JRiver.

Thanks for the event viewer suggestion, but that's Greek to me. The only thing I'd recognize is "MediaCenter18" or whatever it says, which we already know 
I've been away from the machine for a good while, and will be pretty soon again until sometime tomorrow, but meanwhile, I'm lost. One problem is that I'm completely new to Windows 7. I was only beginning to be able to get tweaky with XP with somewhat consistent success.
I appreciate the help, and keep er coming if you've got time and more ideas, anybody...ugh....

That's it! The problem appears to have been solved. I removed that file from my library, and MC has run steadily for a few hours now. I tried playing that file with a couple other players and it is indeed corrupt.

Update: Still going strong, several days later. The problem is indeed solved.
