Problems with MC18 and McIntosh MX121
« on: October 06, 2013, 05:20:14 pm »

I have upgraded from a Denon AVR-4310CI to a McIntosh MX121. I had MC18 working with the Denon just fine. But I can't get MC18 to control the MX121. From the MX121, I can see the MC18 DLNA server and play music.

In MC18, the zone "McIntosh:[MX121]" shows up but when I try to do anything, I get an error msg box "There was a problem controlling the selected DLNA device. Double-check your device, server, network settings".

There are NO options for DLNA settings on the MX121.

Does anyone have any ideas or tell me what to do to debug the issue?

Thanks.

Not all devices will work in both directions.  It sounds like you can play from MC's DLNA Server, but you can not play from MC to the device as a DLNA Renderer.

The wiki has more on DLNA.

Jim,

Looking at the manual, the following text is present at the front:

DLNA Certified® Product Function: FINDS, PLAYS
Content Type: audio, images, videos (Check supported media formats.)

I assume that there is another Product Function which allows the unit to be controlled ?

I will look into the Wiki...

Well, I turned on the option to use full paths versus relative and it started to work. Of course, I turn the option off and it still works.

Bottom line is that it appears that MC18 CAN control a McIntosh MX121.

Jim:  I am curious if you could answer the question about the "DLNA Product Functions: FINDS, PLAYS".  I've tried to find details on this but nothing. The DLNA web site shows the MX121 as a certified DMR.

Is the control function a separate spec/sub spec ?  Should MC always be able to control "DMR" devices ?

Thanks

The DLNA site can't be relied on.  You probably know more than they do now.  And firmware can change.
