Computer crashes when ripping in JRiver 18
« on: November 26, 2013, 03:52:13 pm »

this is a new occurrence - I get part way into a rip and my whole computer crashes.  I have an old PC running Windows XP so understand that this may not be a JRiver issue.  Haven't had a problem ripping in ITunes - just can't get quality flac rips.  Any thoughts / advice short of upgrading my pc?

Try ripping a CD to WAV.  That will tell you whether the problem lies with ripping or with encoding.

A computer crashing is generally a hardware problem.  Slowing the rip down might help.

it didn't crash ... but did freeze the whole computer about 80% into ripping the first track on the cd.  Seems like a hardware issue?

It could be hardware.  It could be the disc.  You could try another PC if you have one.  Or try another CD.

not the disk - have tried 3 different cds.  I also have a laptop running Windows 7 and no problem ripping to JRiver 17 that I have on that machine.  My main pc is probably 7-8 years old so wouldn't surprise me if it couldn't keep up with demands of new software.
