Visual C++ runtime error?
« on: November 26, 2013, 06:00:12 pm »

I just installed 19 and am experiencing some unusual behavior.

My desktop has NAS 5 redundancy storage and acts as the server. I have 2 clients (3, actually, with an iPad and Parallels Access) - an old Toshiba ultralight that runs Windows XP and a new Microsoft Surface Pro running Windows 8. The desktop is Windows 7, with loads of resources. With my prior laptop client and MC 18, the server ran flawlessly and I didn't experience crashes.

About a week ago, I upgraded to MC 19 at almost the same time I replaced the old laptop client with the Surface.
Since then, I have begun experiencing server crashes, primarily but not exclusively when I access the server with the Surface. The error message is that the program terminated prematurely due to a run-time error. The message isn't numerically coded - it simply bears the caption Visual C++. I tried checking to see if I needed to reinstall elements of that on the server, but I apparently have the full house.

I've read through the Forum and know that there's unhappiness with the Surface, esp. Jim and Matt, but I'm stuck with it for the moment if that's the problem. I haven't regressed to 18 yet in the hope that I can find a different solution.

Has anyone else experienced this behavior? It's possible there's some program conflict I haven't identified yet but there haven't been any new/changed programs on the server and its hard to believe that a new piece of hardware running Windows 8 is in and of itself triggering this.

Any suggestions will be welcome.

Make sure you are on the latest builds on all machines.

There was a crashing-bug in MCWS (the web back end for the Library Server) a few builds back.

Zoot,
Could you try 19.0.82 from the top of this board?

Thanks.

I've updated two devices to 082. (The 3rd is in my office ATM.) I left the Surface and the server open overnight but not actively running any music. I found the server crashed this AM with the same runtime error message.  >:(

I checked the media network log on the server, didn't see anything unusual to my untutored eyes, but did find 5 copies of the server icon open when I checked the system tray. Four disappeared immediately when I touched them with the cursor. I elected to start the server function when I open MC and have a habit of reconfirming that the server is running while MC is open, which may result in the multiple icons. Would that somehow trigger the crashes?

Anyway, here's the system info if that helps. As I mentioned, I didn't add any new programs or hardware after I installed 19. Happy Thanksgiving to the folks behind MC, and thanks for creating a superb media tool:

Sorry about the problem.

Could you use Help > Logging to capture a crash log, then send it to logs at jriver (dot) com?

Thanks.

If you run a virus checker on the server, try disabling or uninstalling it.

Do you have an LG TV?  We've found a problem that is triggered by frequent DLNA requests from the LG.  I believe it will be fixed shortly.

Matt - I just sent the crash log. This time it was generated by simultaneously playing (different) files from the server and the client.

Jim, the smart TV is a Panasonic plasma, not an LG. It's on the same network as the two MC devices.

I'll disable Bitdefender antivirus.  It's possible that MC 19 wasn't authorized in the firewall settings.

I'm still seeing the same behavior. There's no single identifiable trigger.

Matt, what did you parse from the crash log?

I'm hopeful it will be fixed in the next build.  Testing appreciated once it's public (probably tomorrow).

Thanks.

I'm experiencing the same problem in 087 and have reported it as a bug there.

If it is Bitdefender causing the problem, disabling it may not be enough.  You may need to uninstall it.

I uninstalled Bitdefender as suggested, left the program open on the server and it crashed within 1/2 hour or so. It was not playing back through a client at the time.

Do you want me to resend a log?

Thanks for the logs.  Unfortunately they don't log the actual crash, so they don't contain a crash dump or even crashing thread.

Do the crashes go away if you turn off Media Network (Options > Media Network)?

I haven't tried that yet but it appears Malwarebytes may be the culprit. I didn't completely uninstall it when I installed Bitdefender, but in  the process of uninstalling and reinstalling Bitdefender, I had to purge Malwarebytes. Since then, MC behaves properly.

I'll let you know if there's anymore deviant behavior. Thanks for the help and happy holidays.
