Gizmo - have I misunderstood what this is?
« on: November 29, 2013, 04:46:31 pm »

I set up my MC Media Network on the PC.
I installed Gizmo on my phone [S4].
I linked the two and could see the MC library on the phone.
To my surprise it played my library without problem. Hooray so far.
At the time I was sitting in my armchair across the room from the PC.

I took the bus to get some shopping.
I got live updates for the bus arrival times...so phone was working.
My phone failed to connect with my MC Media Network on the PC at home.
Have I misunderstood what Gizmo is all about.

I understood I could listen to my MC Library whilst away from home.
thanks,
 ?

Yes you can. Did you open up a port and forward it on your home router to your server?  If not, your router is blocking your phone from connecting as its not inside your network.

I can go into more detail if you tell me what kind of router you have. But, there must be a "WAN" or "Port Forwarding" section in there. Determine what your server's IP address is, then forward port 52199 to that.

Thanks for your suggestions.
It still doesn't work on the bus.
Still works at home.

My router hub is virginmedia.
I have added - under advanced settings - a port forward for 52199.

Using android app Gizmo:
I start to play the phone at home. It plays fine.
Walk to the bus stop and it cannot connect to the server.
What now...

The link to the Network Access topic on our wiki has all the possibilities.

The link to the Network Access topic on our wiki has all the possibilities.

I have spent the past day and half reading and re-reading that topic.
The phone plays at home.
When I go to the bus stop it cannot connect to the server.

The "test" in MC Options appears to work. It does not say it works...but then neither does it say it failed.

Allow me to verify something about Port Forwarding to 52199.
The topic says I should use the WAN address [not the LAN 192.168.0.1]
My virginmedia hub settings does not allow me to specify a WAN such as 86.25.nnn.nnn.
It will only allow me to specify the final number at the end of 192.168.0.n.
If it does allow WAN I have failed to find it. Grrhh.
What now...

The WAN address is specified by your ISP and you cannot change it.

If you are not on your home network you need to set the network address in Gizmo to you WAN address. When you use your home network you use the LAN address of your JRiver machine.

You could have 2 server setups in Gizmo, one with your LAN server address and one with your WAN address.

Thanks for your help

"The WAN address is specified by your ISP and you cannot change it." OK that's good to know.

"If you are not on your home network you need to set the network address in Gizmo to your WAN address"
Yes that makes sense...but how and where on the gizmo app do I do that.
I cannot see anywhere to set the WAN of 86.25.nnn.nnn.

Choose Where to play=Here
Choose a Server to play from=My MC Library name (with the Access Key).
From this I can see the PC MC library on the phone, while at home, even recent updates are shown. Great.

Another thing I need to understand is:
On the PC, MC has created a new Library using my computer name. This is not loaded. When I switched to it to Load. Nothing happened. Does this have a bearing on not being able to use gizmo at the bus stop?
thanks,

I think I was talking rubbish about setting addresses in Gizmo. I think it looks up your JRiver servers address from a server which JRiver maintain, so you don't put in addresses in Gizmo, just the access key.

That implies that either you don't have internet access from your phone when away from your local network or port forwarding isn't set up correctly.

The address that you set in the port forwarding options on your hub is the address of the machine that is running JRiver locally, so if the JRiver machine is 192.168.0.10 you would put 10 in the box for IP address in the port forwarding rule setting.

Nevermind. You tried.

And yes, the JRiver machine IP address [IPv4 according to ipconfig] is set in the box for IP address in the port forwarding rule setting.

Phone and Internet are both working coz I can get live bus arrival times at the bus stop.
I am not convinced port forwarding is behaving itself...although the MC Options "test" suggests it can connect.
I am still unable to play on the bus.
