Can't rip this cd and don't know why
« on: December 24, 2013, 09:22:32 pm »

I can't remember the last time you had a problem ripping a cd but I just picked up a Vivaldi disc with Giuliano Carmignola and it will rip the first two tracks and then an error occurs and it will not continue. 20 tracks left to rip. It's a Masterworks Expanded edition "Featuring Sonys DSD System and SBM Direct..." It's not just MediaCenter either. Any solutions?

Try AnyDVD. It has an option to remove copy protection from audio CD's.

Also, have you tried system restore. Pic a restore point before you inserted the disk. It will restore system files back to then but leave personal files intact.

I was infested with this many many years ago and wish I could remember all. I do remember that the only solution that truly worked was to reinstall windows. after reading this post it brought back all the horrors.

I do remember I used Roxio at the time to burn copies of cd's and I remember there is another folder in the infected cd's with the tracks....if you can see that folder you may be able to burn it to a cd and then rip it.

depending on your OP sys, if you have a old copy of Roxio or Nero that will work with your OP sys I would use that to burn to cd...then rip it with WMP. You most likely are going to have to reinstall to truly get rid of the rootkit.....you can bing or google    Sony BMG Updates XCP Removal Tool

but it is as glynor directs you 2....it can't truly be removed without wiping your hd and starting fresh.

Good Luck

I don't support this 2nd link I posted nor have I downloaded anything that resides there, it was intended to show you what XCP has done to your registry.

Really .... It's 2013 pretty much 2014 and we have no solution to this .... I can't describe it any other way - 'outrage'?! Something like this is still floating around out there to cause people grief without recourse?
I bought a brand new computer a few months back. Strictly for music. I purchased the latest MediaCenter. I installed 100G of music.
Man do I feel like an idiot. I will NEVER by another Sony product, let alone a disc.

Ok. It took me twenty minutes to calm down. It's Christmas morning after all. I am running Win7 and did a System Restore as per the gentlemans suggestion above. Fortunately as I mentioned I only use this computer for music and a little surfing now and then so it wasn't a big worrisome operation. Not that I know my problem has been fixed.

The Wikipedia link that glynor posted suggests this is a lousy piece of work by lousy people- but how will it affect my music collection or will the system restore do the trick?

I should note, I don't know for sure that this is your problem.

Sony pulled all of their CDs with the various incarnations of their terrible DRM (finally) in 2007.  Retail stores (which responded to the recall) should have returned unsold inventory.  So, if you bought it recently, and it wasn't a left-over from 2007, that's probably not the issue.  Sony did also finally (not until late 2008, though) publish a list of all the affected discs.  I'd read through the EFFs FAQ on the eventual legal settlement over the issue: http://w2.eff.org/IP/DRM/Sony-BMG/settlement_faq.php

There's also this, though this is older and from before Sony had "given up":
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2005/11/are-you-infected-sony-bmgs-rootkit

There are other possibilities.  The CD could have been just bad.  It is rare, but does happen.  Or, your drive could be busted or bad.  And, it also could have something to do with this:
Featuring Sonys DSD System

DSD isn't standard RedBook audio CD.  That's a special kind of audio data:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Stream_Digital

To read DSD, you need a SACD player, not a standard CD player.  There aren't any of these available for PCs (and few enough set-top styles anymore, as the format was largely a failure), but I think there's a way to use a PlayStation or something to rip them to a PC.  I don't know the details, but other people here do.  Try searching for DSD on the forum.

The disc should be labeled a SACD if that is the case, though.  The reference to DSD could just be some marketing about the mastering process.

So, I'm not sure.  There are multiple possibilities.

Thanks for your time and thoughts glynor.
I have an older Pioneer DV578-A that plays SACD. I'll give this a whirl later.
Come to think of it, I have a couple of things to try here. There's a digital optical out on the Pioneer and and same in on my 24 bit / 96khz audio interface for my DAW, and of course there's audio out and in also.... I may yet get a decent cut into my library.
