Failed to load image...
« on: January 26, 2014, 10:28:59 am »

Weird one this. Pictures load fine through Windows Explorer. Standard View just shows a red camera image, with the message 'failed to load image' if you click on it or it's part of a pictures playlist. What's weird is that some pictures in the folder show and other's don't. This happens in various folders, completely randomly.

Theater View doesn't show them either.

Any ideas on this one?

Just done a clean install of Windows and MC and have the same problem, although this time it seems less, and for different folders/images. As in the OP, viewing them through Windows Explorer and Windows Photo Viewer is fine.

Is there a maximum number of file 'types' (Images, Audio, Video etc.) MC can handle?

There is no maximum.  What type of images are they?  jpg?

If you hover a mouse over an image that doesn't work, you can see the location and name.  Check those to see that they exist.

Yeah they're all jpgs.

They should exist, as this is a clean import. I'll do the hover check thing anyway and let you know.

OK, had a look this morning.

If I delete an album, which in my case is a folder, and re-import it, it straight away shows the generic red camera icon.

If I browse to the location using Windows Explorer, do a right click and Open With... this is what happens:

MS Paint: Displays the file no problem
PhotoShop: Displays the file no problem
Windows Photo Viewer: Displays the file no problem
Windows 8 Photos app: Displays the file no problem
JRiver Media Center: failed to load image (followed by image path)

So even when I right click an image in Windows Explorer and tell it to open with JRiver, it still fails to load. So it's not a location problem, or an image problem because it opens in all of the other applications. When I hover in JRiver, it does give me Exif data, like the camera name and details.

AV is Windows Defender (or whatever is bundled with Windows 8.1). I have exclusions for all of the JRiver exe's though.

Processor is AMD Athlon II X2 250 @ 3GHz

Any ideas Jim? Really anxious to get this sorted if I can. The files themselves are obviously ok.

Have you made an image available for anyone else to reproduce the problem?

OK, had a look this morning.

If I delete an album, which in my case is a folder, and re-import it, it straight away shows the generic red camera icon.

If I browse to the location using Windows Explorer, do a right click and Open With...

Right click on one of the files from with MC and do Locate > On-Disk (External)

This should open Windows Explorer and highlight the file in question, to make sure you are choosing the actual files that MC's database is pointing to.  If MC gives you an error, that will be our best clue as to what is happening, but just verify that it passes the smell test here.

Then, assuming that just worked the same as finding them manually, select a few of the broken files in your view, and choose File > Export Playlist.

Set the dialog that results to:

Filename and Location: Somewhere you can find it easily.
Store paths relative: Unchecked

Format: MPL
Included Fields: All Fields
Output Range: Selection

(Make sure to get that last one, or it'll export a giant MPL file with all of the files in your view.)

Then, post the resulting MPL file here so we can look at it.  If you can also post copies of the example images from disk, it might help if something in the rendering engine is broken (it doesn't sound like it though from your description).  If the stuff is too big to attach to the post directly, you can use WikiSend to upload it and create a URL that expires in a few days.

Processor is AMD Athlon II X2 250 @ 3GHz

Just to confirm, this CPU supports SSE2 and so should be just fine.  Besides, that'd make everything not work, so that's not the case here.

Right click on one of the files from with MC and do Locate > On-Disk (External)

No errors - it finds the correct folder, and pre-selects the correct file, and if I double click to open it, it opens in Windows 8's photo viewer app just fine.

Will upload the MPL and sample images. If I choose MPL I can't select All Fields - it's greyed out and defaults to Visible only.

This is the Wikisend link but it doesn't do anything. Tried uploading 3 times now and the same thing happens.

Guess anyone didn't get a chance to look at this. Wikisend link will have expired now so would have to do another one.

I remember trying this, but the Wikisend download required a password, so I wasn't able to download the image.

Your files are corrupt or damaged.  You can see the problem at the bottom of the photo, where the photo is smeared (parts of the image are shifted).

Also, PhotoShop Elements indicates the damage.  See attached screenshot.

The files fail to load with a "Two SOI marker" error.  This points to bad files.

I never thought of opening them in a 'proper' editor. I use PhotoShop CC and get the same error.

Buuuut, it can still open and display it, so can MS Paint, Photo Viewer, Photos App, etc.

All except Media Center - can the checking be lessened so it still displays it? Or should I re-save the photos?
