MC19 won't start "Critical Error"
« on: February 05, 2014, 02:22:39 am »

Hi

My MC 19  (Install version MediaCenter190054.exe) will no longer start, but comes up with a Critical Error in "Media Center 19.exe" saying "Failed to load JR tools".  In Windows Task Manger, it shows over 50 copies of Media Center 19 (32 bit), each with about 1MByte of Memory but no CPU load.  I cannot re-install the software, as the installer fails to copy the files to the destination folder with a message "Please ensure that the file 'C:\Program Files9x86)\J River\Media Center 19\JRTools.dll' is not in use"

I have tried removing MC19 with the Windows un-installer, but it fails with an Information "Failed to load skin 'Noire' " message, followed by a "Help Us Improve" message box.

What next?

History repeating itself? Your problem sounds very similar to this:

The post above at Reply #1 by glynor talks about Step 0 - Reboot.

I don't understand how you'd have 50 MC entries in Task Manager if you've rebooted. That should boot up clean.

Get comment here and apply glynor's advice first but if a reboot doesn't clear things, it may help if you run a registry cleaner.

The other point I'd make is that it doesn't make sense to me that you're trying to load an old build (MC 19.0.054). See Step 1 at Reply #1 in the link above.

All the best - hope you get squared away soon..  ;)

Hi Astromo

None of the above worked, but in trying to delete the entire MC19 directory, I found that the JRTools.dll was in use by another program "Squeezelite.exe" which is a headless UPnP player that I sometimes ran from JRiver.  Squeezelite is started on my PC as a service, and every time it fail to start or connect, it would try again and create a new copy of MC19, hence the growing number of instances even after a reboot.  Once I disabled the service, I could re-boot and then install the latest version MC19 with no trouble.  All is now well - just another 4 hours of my life spent in debugging things that should just work.

Thanks for the info.

[Editors note: squeezelite is a 3rd party tool, and not a JRiver product.]
