How to start building my network - Suggestions?
« on: February 10, 2014, 05:54:51 pm »

Hi All,

I'm looking to understand what I need to look into re: setting up a home JRiver based network with Windows.

I've got the following hardware:

Living Room HTPC - Intel Core2Quad Q6700, 6GB ram, ASus 7750, SSD

Exercise Room - Intel Core2Quad Q6600, 6GB ram, Crappy silent video card, HDD

Bedroom - ASus EEE EB1021, AMD based APU, dual core 1.7Ghz with HD6320 graphics, 8GB Ram, HDD.

Storage - HP MediaSmart Server 475, 2TB HDD

TV - HDHomerun Dual ASTC Tuner

With the exception of the storage, all run Windows 8.1.

Currently, each instance of JRiver is it's own program, they're not linked at all.  All files are stored on the MediaSmart.  I just got TV and I'm having a lot of framedrops on any system.

What do you think is the best way for me to set this up efficiently?  I'm thinking of dropping the server and using the exercise room as a network storage pc.

Any ideas on what old threads I can look up that would be useful?

The best way to learn is to start connecting machines.  Run Media Server at Windows Startup on the server.  Then try connecting to it from other PC's.

The wiki has a lot of useful information.  Start at "Media Network".

Post the TV problem on the TV board.  It could be signal or it could be a PC that won't do Red October HQ.  Try RO Std.  Try turning Hardware Acceleration off.
