MC19.0.131 Hanging When Hitting Pause
« on: May 07, 2014, 01:43:36 am »

Hi,
I run JRM 19.131, on a windows 8.1 Vaio PC, it was perfectly stable until yesterday, when while listening I hit PAUSE. The program crushed beyond recovery, only forced shut down worked, and then it didn't want to restart, unless the PC was restarted. I repeated this sequence again and again without any hint.
The music is on an external La Cie 4TB HD, which runs on auto sleep if not active after several minutes. The program is set to play from the RAM buffer. If next song is due and the HD idles, then the program awaits until the HD is on and then playback continues. I do not know if this is relevant though..

Please advice.
Kind regards,
Vlad

In the future, please create your own thread for any issues, as discussed in the thread where you originally posted this question:

If you are actually having an issue like this, though, please work through the first steps in the guide above, and then if needed, post about your issue in a new thread on Interact.  Replies to this thread that are requests for help with specific issues will be moved or deleted.

And, as also mentioned, please work through the guide:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Guide

That kind of issue, if isolated to when you hit Pause, is likely to be a problem with the Audio Device setup or driver.  But, without the additional detail as described in the Troubleshooting Guide, we won't be able to help much.

So, read through that, and if you don't manage to solve it yourself, post back on this thread with the details requested in the section called "Things to Include In Your Post on Interact".  Thanks.

Hi,
After browsing step by step all the indications in the rule book, as indicated, JR still CRUSHES if I push PAUSE.
I've attached the LOG (even if it doesn't show??!!).
Kind regards,
Vlad

Turn off memory playback in MC.

Test local files, not from the NAS.

These should help identify where the problem is.

Hi,
Removing the option of playing from memory solved the pause crush issue.

Interesting.

For the record, memory playback does not improve quality unless your hardware is otherwise broken.  So, assuming you aren't using junky onboard audio that grounds out or is otherwise noisy when the hard drive is accessed, it won't make any difference to leave this turned off.

But, as to why it is hanging with it turned on and you pause playback, I can't say.  That's odd.  Someone who knows more about this setup will have to chime in here.

Also, please respond to THIS THREAD, rather than the one you've been using.  Thanks.  If you don't have a lot of experience with online bulletin boards like this one, that's fine.  Take a look at this thread over here for some help on that:

but...switched the Chord kernel streaming off. I was not wearing the headphones so enthusiastically hitting play and pause again and again, I wasn't aware that the computer was playing in fact...
Reinstating the Chord kernel, audio went back to normal but pause crushes JR.
Playing form the PC HD is the same. Directly from memory or not makes no difference. It still crush.
The sole thing which I can imagine is that it might be related to the new drivers for Chord Qute EX 24/384 and DSD128.
I have to avoid pause...
Kind regards,
Vlad

Well, if it worked before and you updated the drivers and it broke... Put the old drivers back on.

For the record: If your computer is crashing so severely that the only way to unstick it is to reboot, that means it is absolutely hardware or driver related (or the OS is borked up beyond all recognition).  MC itself CANNOT cause problems like that, as the OS does not give it permission to do anything that can cause a systemwide deadlock or kernel-level crash.

That is why Windows NT (and derivatives like XP, 7, 8) are better than the old Windows 95-style OSes.
Regular software cannot crash the whole system.

Hi,
I was not saying that the whole PC is crushing. The rest works fine, just JR will not restart, unless the PC is restarted.
The message when trying to restart JR is that (i) it is still running, or (ii) that several instance are on in start up, or (iii) other reason.
I cannot go back to the old driver, Chord's update from HD to EX means changing the whole hardware internals.
What is important for me is the quality of the music reproduction through my gear, and I can report discrete improvements in liquidity comparing playback from memory versus external/internal HD.
So I'll continue to avoid pause...

Vlad
