how do i get jriver to find my library stored on an external lacie HD? when i go to file/library i get the spinning beach ball forever. i appreciate any help

File > Library should work. Don't know why you're getting beachballed. Make sure any mounted network shares are not broken or timing out (which causes the Finder to lock because HFS+ is dumb).
But... Probably the best way is via the Library Manager:
