............I am still experiencing some occasional jittery video playback that was not there using Shark007 Codecs with WMC.  I'm SOLD on JRiver--I'd just like to try a different codec pack.

You can just not use Red October.  There's nothing to uninstall.

Under Tools --> Options --> Video --> Video mode you have the option of
- RO (based on LAV Filters
- RO HQ (adds madVR for rendering)
- Advanced (lets you mix and match codecs if you want)

Shark 007 "current releases uses LAV filters by nevcairiel" (who is Hendrik on this board a a JRiver Dev). 

Since the dev of LAV filters, the days of needing to play with and configure custom filters is gone for all but the most esoteric things. 

There is a heap of info on the Wiki you may find of interest.

Thank you.  One final question--when JRiver MC versions are upgraded, are these codecs and their options settings saved or must I reinstall Shark007 and re-do the video mode each time?

There should be no reason to use it - Shark007 just repackages LAV Filters - which is built into Media Center, and the developer (Hendrik/nevcariel) now works for JRiver.

I understand.  I've a few episodes of shows to watch--I'll report back.  My benchmarks are TV shows that played fine on WMC with Shark007 but when I (happily and thankfully) switched to JRiver, those shows (from the same authors) playback with the same glitches (like skipped frames) that I experienced before I used Shark007 with WMC.  To be fair, playback with JRiver and RO has become much better in the last few builds *before* I reconfigured today and added Shark007.  Lip sync is fine; there are no audio issues.  Now that I can "switch" codecs, I'll watch for a few days and report back.  Thank you for your patience with me and this issue.

Update.  I did add and am using Shark007 codecs; being able to adjust certain settings (right-click) in LAV Splitter video playback (for me) improves greatly with much less "catch-up".    Also, these settings and codecs remain after upgrades FYI.

There are practically no settings in LAV Splitter that interact with actual playback at all.

Once rules have been applied, (attachment 1) Under Custom Video Modes, one can select rule Type and Filter.  By clicking Properties, the relevant (attachment 2) properties can be addressed.  Settings shown are the ones that work for me.
