Disk space management
« on: June 16, 2014, 03:03:09 pm »

I could not find any information in the Wiki on this.

What (if anything) does MC19 currently do to create necessary disk space for TV recording and most importantly, when does it occur ?

This management is implied by the "Keep" setting (Forever/10 days/etc).

Thanks !

MC does not do anything to create disk space.  You'll want to point recording at a drive with plenty of free space.

I believe it also checks for open space and won't use the drive if there's less than 10% (?) left.

It's 1% or 2 GB whichever is lower.  This is the threshold at which recording will be abandoned.  MC starts give warning when space is below 20 GB.

Then what does the "Cleanup Mode" setting do ?

And:

Where and how does it give that warning ?

Clean up mode is to automatically delete recordings that meet the set criteria.  You may say that this is a form of disk management.  MC does not create disk space, but it salvage disk space  :)

Warning is given at the time a recording is attempted.

Cleanup is performed periodically (no less than 8 hours since previous clean up, and when nothing is being played in any zone).  It is also done during shutdown.

The low disk space warning - is it a popup dialog box that needs to be dismissed ?  If not, what format ?

The warning is in the form of OSD.  It would not be too helpful for scheduled recording.  However, the warning is given not only for recording, but also during time-shifting.

Can you be more precise about "periodically" - i.e. how often ?

Also, by "shutdown" do you mean MC20 shutdown or Windows shutdown ?   If both are occurring, will it delay Windows shutdown to do the cleanup ?

Thanks !

"Periodically" maybe a bit misleading, but just a bit.  MC has a 5 seconds timer to check for TV recording related tasks.  It mostly is for starting and stopping TV recordings.  When there is no tuner activity (neither recording nor watching live), it checks whether it's time to clean up the recorded programs.  As mentioned before, it will not do anything unless it has been at least 8 hours since last clean up.

So, if you have a tuner constantly running (like having many recordings, one after another, with overlapping time), then it is theoretically possible that clean up may never happen.  In normal situation, 8 hours after last clean-up, another clean up occurs as soon as MC finds an idle time.

At MC shutdown time (not system shutdown), the cleanup is also performed - this time without regard to the 8-hour restriction.  Normally you do not expect to have more than a handful recordings to be deleted, so I do not think it would noticeably delay Windows shutdown.
