Some static noise in audio playback exaSound e28 ASIO.
« on: July 20, 2014, 12:35:58 am »

Over time I am getting into some situations when I hear pretty loud static noise while playback.
First time i heard it when I had i7 Mac mini Windows 8.1. Now I have i5 PC with gtx 780.

First time I fixed it by extending the buffer in the audio device settings from 50 ms to 250 ms.

Now I am getting this again occasionally even with even 250 ms.

When I look into my CPU load I can see 0.75 ghz at ~ 16% CPU consumption. It seems to me the CPU is not the bottleneck.

When I try upscaling  96khz to 192 kHz it is static plus start and stops in sound with the CPU load as low as above mentioned.

Did anyone experience such issue?

Thanks,
Alex

A smaller buffer sometimes is better.

Did you check with exasound for recommended settings and updates?

Try searching for other exasound posts.

I found one post on crackling noise. It sounds very similar case.

I think unlinked the e28 volume control from jriver. I set the e28 volume on -15 db and jriver on -20 db. I believe it should avoid any clipping.

Next I have noticed that I can hear this on one bluray only that has 96 kHz sound track. The other blue rays that I tried had 48 kHz sound track. With those 48 kHz there is no crackling noise on any volume level I can stand.

The I did experiment with pure audio track. There is no issue event when I up-sample 176 kHz tracks into 352 kHz.

No up sampling work with that blu ray. It is not just crawling sound but also stater playback. The device settings buffer does not help here with up sampling.

All the video is smooth and goes via gtx 780 with no issues.

I am puzzled ...

Any comments anyone?

Thanks,
Alex

Actually, I found one connection between audio and video that makes up sampling  real bad.
When I unchecked video->video clock, up sampling started to be no problem. No crackling sound.

I would check your Windows power settings. Try setting it to "high performance" which should keep the CPU at the highest speed and see if your problems go away.

When playing back videos, I upsample all audio to 192kHz with Video Clock enabled, and have not experienced this problem.

If you have analyzed files in Media Center before playback, it should never allow the audio to clip.

I ran JRiver benchmark, and I can see that the CPU goes up to 3.40 gHz and 80% CPU consumption with my current power settings.

Well that is expected. Try the high performance mode and see if it helps with your playback problems.
