Can't Download Plug-ins
« on: February 20, 2003, 11:29:05 am »

I am new and I cannot figure out how to get any encoder plug-ins.  I am trying to rip CDs and make MP3 files, but cannot get any MP3 encoders to download.  I get the message, "Invalid package file.  Cannot continue."  OR   "Cannot creat encoder plug-in."  I can rip the CD tracks, but they are not saved as MP3. they are being saved as wma files.  Can anyone tell me what I need to do?  Thank you.

What version do you have?  You can copy your system info from MJ Help and paste it here.

Did you try visiting the plug-ins pages?

Try using IE.

Here is a link to plug-in download help (from the FAQ page under Help above):

I have version 8.0 and just downloaded it today.  It works to sort and even to rip CDs.  I have been to the encoder plug in page, and have tried to download every encoder on the page and each one says "Invalid package file.  Cannot continue."  When I try anyway to encode to MP3, I get the message, "Cannot create plug-in encoder."  Help!

Did you install Version 9 of Media Center first?  Or any other versions of 8?

Which version of 8 do you have.  Copy system info from MJ Help and paste it here.

I don't know.  We've seen it a few times before.

Make sure you are logged into Windows and then download this version:

I don't know whether it will work, but it's worth a shot.

Again, there is a plug-ins problems page in the FAQ here.  Try it for a workaround if the new download doesn't work for you.

I'll try the FAQ, but the download you offered didn't do anything.  It is a shame, because I like the layout, and would like to make this work.  Without being able to do MP3 from CDs, though, it doesn't do me enough good to stick around.  Thanx for your help.

It MAY help to install XP SP1. Before doing so uninstall MJ completely. After OS update reinstall MJ.

I have the same problem.  I can't figure it out.  At first I was a bit upset that a professional package like MJ would have this type of problem when I have no such issues with any other software.

Then...I tried 'right-clicking' on the plug-in link and selecting 'save as' from the menu.  I was able to save the link to my desktop and have been able to install the plug-ins from there.

I have, however, had problems with installing some of the visualizations.  Many of them say "WinAmp plug-ins aren't compatible with Media Jukebox" (or something to that effect).

That's in the link to plug-in download help (from the FAQ page under Help above):

http://www.mediajukebox.com/mediajukebox/pluginproblems.html

If we knew what the problem was, we'd fix it, but it may be an OS bug.  It isn't handling the mjp file type correctly.

Download Problems with Plug-ins

Problems with downloading plug-ins or even programs are often related to proxy servers or firewalls or overly agressive security settings on the PC.

Things to check:

If you are not using IE (Internet Explorer), please try it.  Make sure that you are using IE 5.0 or above.  Make sure it works with other sites.

Media Jukebox and Media Center will automatically use the proxy server settings from IE.  Make sure they are correct.  If you are using automatic detection, try switching to a specific proxy server.

In some cases, uninstalling a firewall has been necessary.  Disabling it should have worked but did not.

1.  I am using the current version of IE & Windows XP

2.  Since I have no idea what a proxy server is this may be my problem.  I connect via cable modem.  The modem runs through my router then to my PC.
IE is not set up to use a proxy server...it is set to automatically detect settings.  Would you suggest an alternative setting?

3.  It's my understanding the router acts as a firewall...could that be part of the problem?

I don't know.  I haven't experienced any downloading problems with other software.  I'm open to suggestions.

1) OK

2) A proxy would be unusual in your setup (unless your ISP is using a proxy) - assume you don't have one.

3) It may be using NAT (network address translation...which behaves like a mini-firewall) - uncommon for cable but is common for higher end DSL installations. Usually isn't a problem. If it is a LinkSys Cable/DSL router then they generally do NAT.

Could you temporarily bypass the router and hook the modem directly to the PC? You may need a RJ45 Inline coupler (which connects 2 separate net cables together).
