over the air set top box
« on: October 04, 2014, 06:03:24 pm »

Does Media Center work with over the air set top boxes?  I  have a digital tv tuner that plugs into my toshiba quosmio and would love to be able to use media center with this.  I am also having problems with windows xp media center working with the tv signal, does this need to be working to have media center working?  Many thanks :)

Welcome.  MC will work with an OTA antenna, by using a digital tuner.  I'm not sure what you mean by Set Top Box.

Windows Media Center isn't required.

Thanks for the quick reply- I have an ota antenna with an external digital tuner but cannot seem to get it to work- I have been through the tv setup several times and have almost finished when I get an error message that the tv tuner is in use by another program though it is not being used as far as I can tell.  I thought it might be related to the problem I am having with Windows XP media center saying it is unable to register audio or video files needed.

What tuner device are you using?

If you have an external tuner (or Set top box), you need to feed its output into a video capture device on your computer.  MC directly works with the video capture device.  MC only interacts with the external tuner via an IR blaster device that changes channels on your tuner box.

I have a dish tv pal digital tuner.  and Yes, I got the IR to learn some new codes but still got the message that the video was in use when I'm pretty sure it wasnt.

Windows Media Center can cause a conflict sometimes.  Try a search for how to disable it.  MC has a WMC option in the startup section.

Please go to Tools > Options > Television > Advanced, and click "Copy television related filter info to clipboard", and then paste the info here.
