Immediate Trial expiration in MC20
« on: October 10, 2014, 10:28:26 pm »

I've been using MC19 for the past several years without a hitch.  Just installed MC20 to take it for a spin and immediately got a "trial period has expired" error when launching the program.

I'm thinking it might be keying off of my original install of 19 instead of this fresh install of 20.

Any idea how I can get a 30 day trial of MC 20 so I can try it out?

Thanks,
Sten

It won't do that.

Trial expired immediately could be triggered by some things, such as:

The date/time on the PC is incorrect.
The PC name changed (though this would also cause you're MC19 to require reactivating).
MC20 has been installed before.
You didn't get you're MC20 installer from J River.

The standard response here is normally try it on another PC, or format your hard drive and start over. I do not work for J River so you might get lucky. You most likely won't though.

Thanks for getting back to me...

Date and time are correct.
PC name hasn't changed since OS was installed.  (Can't see this making a difference on a new install)
MC20 hasn't been installed before, this is the very first time.
The MC20 download came directly from the JRiver site - MediaCenter200021

I'd like to try this out on my HTPC as it's the one hooked up to my DAC and stereo.  Not really interested in reinstalling the OS (Server 2012 R2) just to try out MC20.

I'm on the fence about upgrading from 19 and would just like to try it out before making the purchase.

I was able to reproduce it a while back in fresh VMs using the Mac version.  There is something fiddly in there, I think, but I didn't get much traction.

Thanks to those who have chimed in so far.

As an alternative, could I purchase the upgrade and then have the option of a refund for up to 30 days?

I can't speak for them for sure, but they don't do refunds.  I think we stand a much better chance to get whatever caused this to happen (as I said, I was able to get it to happen to me) fixed so that you can have your trial.

Unfortunately, a whole bunch of the JRiver staff are away this weekend.  I don't know if that trip will leak into the week or not.

I'll ask again, though... I've seen it happen with the Mac version "with my own eyes" (and 6233638 seemed to experience it as well).  It does seem to be related to having later builds of MC19 installed, but I don't know for sure.  Apparently, it is happening with the Windows version too, or at least to stenacho.  To be clear, I did this:

1. Installed a clean install of OSX in a VM.
2. Updated it and whatnot and installed a few unrelated-to-MC apps.
3. Installed the current MC19 build (no previous install on the VM).  Did NOT restore my MC19 license, just ran in Trial mode.  Set it up by restoring a Library Backup.
4. Installed MC20.  Trial was expired on first launch.
5. Trial of MC19 continued to work without issue.

If it would help, I'm happy to do additional testing in VMs (Windows or OSX) and provide whatever detail you require.  Let me know.

Happening to me too, windows 8.1 with registered copy of MC19.  Installed 200047 and immediately said trial period expired.  Same problem with 200062.  Today was the first day that I tried to install MC20.  My clock is correct, and the PC name has never been changed.  Downloaded 200047 & 200062 directly from http://www.jriver.com/download.html

Did you try it before?  Once the trial is expired, you can't get a new one.  Sorry.  You could try it on another machine if you have one.

Did you even read the post before you replied?

I'd rather try it on the machine that's in my stereo, not much use anywhere else.

Some people reported problems like this, they had an expired MC19 trial, and MC20 immediately expired as well. Maybe John should take a quick look.

The source of the confusion may be that they tried MC19 after it added the ability to use an MC20 license.  The last couple of builds could use either license.

Well, I'm not going to buy it if I can't test it....

Trying it on another machine doesn't tell me anything about how it performs on the machine I need it to run on.

Wouldn't it actually make more sense to fix the problem that causes it to immediately say trial expired even when it's the first time MC20 has been installed?

I think Hendrik hit the nail on the head, I know my MC19 trial expired before I bought my MC19 license.

The source of the confusion may be that they tried MC19 after it added the ability to use an MC20 license.  The last couple of builds could use either license.

I was able to reproduce it on a brand new virtual machine that had an active, still-working, MC19 trial.
