Sidecar not creating if media file is read only
« on: October 23, 2014, 02:10:37 pm »

I was tagging a bunch of videos today and MC errored out on some of them because they were read-only. I changed them to be writeable and the MC properly created the sidecar file. The media file was untouched. Directory permissions were not changed. Should it error on the file being read only if it's not going to write to it?

Edit: Also, is there a way to tell MC to reattempt tagging that failed? I've been manually changing the tag and then changing it back which updates it twice.

Do you need me to do more testing on this?

Is there somewhere else I should report what looks like a bug to me?

I can reproduce the problem.  That's half the battle.

But I get the popup error:
"Media Center encounter errors while tagging or moving files...."

I've known this for a long time.  I thought it was intentional, to protect read-only files.

If a media file asset is in-use or read-only, writing to the sidecar files fails.  I figured this was just like the "protection" that tags embedded in files would have... If a file is read-only on the filesystem, you can't write tag changes to it.  Sidecars currently work exactly like embedded tags, including this detail.

I'm not particularly opposed to changing it (and, in fact, if it gets around the in-use issue, it would help me, not hurt me), but... Are you sure?

That's a good point.  Protecting the sidecar because the file is read-only is logical.

Hmm...

Therefore create sidecar if one doesn't exist, but otherwise leave alone?

On this subject, please give us the option to remove the read-only attributes from files and write tags, rather than just failing.
Minor detail, but would make my life so much easier.

Why do you have read-only files everywhere?

It happens to me with in use files, which is a bit annoying in a multi-user scenario with a file share.  But... Not read-only files of a type that MC could "fix".  If I ever encountered these, I'd fix them or they'd be read only on purpose.

Dunno exactly :P

Downloaded stuff can be bad for read-only tags a lot of the time, but it's not something I've ever really thought about other than the minor irritation factor every time this message comes up.
As MC could easily 'fix' this problem, it's one of those things that seems to be to be good manners to offer up the option.

This happens to me very often and is annoying when it halts video (but not sound) replay ....

It would be great it it could be adjusted simply to get on with the tagging regardless ....

It's not really an issue other than that it's annoying to catch on a headless server (the client isn't notified of tagging failures, even if the client initiated the tag) and there's no "Retry Errors" functionality. If I were trying to protect tags intentionally I'd make the sidecar read only as well.

As far as MC "fixing" the file, that wouldn't work for me as it's typically a permissions issue on the individual file (a file got there with the wrong user somehow), which MC has no ability to fix.

Yeah. As I said, I'm not anti the change. It bugs me too with in use files.

I just assumed it was on purpose since it's always been that way and it make sense on some level.

Personally i read-protect files to protect them from unintentional tagging, so I actually like that it doesn't write tags, even when its only sidecar-files where the actual file is not touched. At least I think so :)

Absolutely :)
I'm not saying remove the dialog entirely, just provide a third button (checkbox?) to remove the status and carry on regardless if the user so desires.

As a personal thing, my library is king. I have backups dating back years, and if something goes wrong, all I'll do is find and export the appropriate data from a backup. It always amazes me when people are fussy about what's in the tags, that's so easy to change :)
I don't care what's in the file or it's tags until and unless I try to sync it to a handheld device.
If I was doing this my ideal way, the only time the files would be touched is when they're written to a handheld or when I specifically right-click and press update tags, but unfortunately MC doesn't update tags in either case unless the writing tags option is on globally....

This is a very common problem. In afflicted systems any downloaded media is downloaded as read-only. It's INCREDIBLY annoying. I would love to have MC create a sidecar for the tags regardless of the read only status of the media file. I have to change the folders' attributes several times a day before importing into MC.

I have a solution to the issue of your files being downloaded as "Read Only" I think if ...

Options / Preferences / Advanced ..... scroll down to bt.read only on complete ..... it is defaulted to True when program is installed .... change it to False by double clicking..... and I think you
will solve that issue........

Discussion of other software is sometimes allowed, but not always.  Sorry.

If there is an MC problem, please start a new thread.
