MC 19.0.163 crashes within 10 seconds of startup
« on: October 28, 2014, 08:57:29 pm »

I have been troubleshooting my problem for about 2 weeks off-and-on now, and I have made no progress.  Until 2 weeks ago I had been running for months (on 19.0.111 I believe) without issue.  Now when I launch MC 19 it crashes within 10 seconds -- I have just enough time to click Help -- Logging -- Report Problem before it crashes.

There are no steps to take to reproduce the problem, other than attempt to launch MC19.  10 seconds later it has crashed.

I think I have been careful to follow the Troubleshooting guide posted by glynor.
I have tried installing the latest version of MC 19.
I think all of the plugins and skins have been disabled, because I leave those checked when trying to start MC19 I get the Incomplete Shutdown Detected popup that suggests these be disabled.
I have updated my audio, video, and USB drivers.
I have turned off anti-virus
There are no other programs running in the background.  This computer is dedicated as a media server. (Task Manager reports 49 processes running)
I have removed RAM, leaving half in at a time.  System has 12GB of RAM when all is installed.

If I check the Windows Problem details it typically shows this:
Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:   APPCRASH
  Application Name:   Media Center 19.exe
  Application Version:   19.0.163.0

but will sometimes claim this:

Turning off antivirus isn't enough if that's what's causing the trouble.  Uninstalling is the only way to know.

Did anything change on the machine at the time the problem began?

"AcXtrnl.dll is an Application Compatibility DLL for Windows, and is usually only loaded by a process if "Run this program in compatibility mode" is checked in the Compatibility tab of the Properties dialog for the executable."

Compatibility mode should not be used.

I did not know that AcXtrnl was a compatibility library for Windows.  I thought it was a library that allowed programs to check the compatibily of external hardware that the program would make use of -- in MC's case perhaps that would be the CD drives or a NAS.  Anyway since the library is for running a program in compatibility mode, then the odd thing about that is, is I have Run as Administrator checked in the properties but do NOT have "Run this Program in Compatibility Mode" checked.  I have also tried to start MC19 without the Run as Administrator checked -- it makes no difference at this point.  either checked or unchecked MC19 crashes within 10 seconds.  When MC19 was working, I found it to be more reliable when Run as Administrator was checked:  without it I would have to shutdown and restart MC19 about every 2 weeks, but with it the shutdown/restart was more like every two months.

I will try uninstalling the AV software.  MC and the AV software had been running happily together since last March.

Nothing changed to my knowledge.  I don't allow Windows to do automatic updates.  I do these manually about twice a month.  I was almost due for an update when MC19 went haywire, but it had run for 10 days on the previous update without issue.  I did go ahead and "roll back" that update in an attempt to get MC back to stability -- no go.
I suppose the AV definitions likely changed during that time.  Those seem to update almost daily.

Malwarebytes and Anti-virus programs have been uninstalled, but the problem remains.

Anyone have other thoughts on how to fix this?

It looks like it might be having trouble when auto importing a file called "E:\Video\Gymnastics\Intermediate Tumbling.mp4" on your computer.  You could try to quickly turn off auto import ( Tools / Options / Library & Folders / uncheck "Run auto-import in background"), then close MC and restart to see if the crashing stops.  Then try importing that particular file and see if it crashes.  If so, maybe you could send us a link to the file (i.e. Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) and we could troubleshoot the problem.  Thanks.

John, sorry for the delayed response.  I have been out of commission for awhile.

THANK YOU for your help.  Turning off the auto-import has fixed my trouble.  I'll have to spend a little time sorting out the details on that particular file, but for now it's just good to have MC19 back.  ;D
