Getting an error after changing number of channels to 5.1
« on: November 11, 2014, 01:25:05 am »

Up until this point I have only used Media Center for music listening.
I am now trying to watch a TV show in 5.1 surround sound with the PC outputting to my Onkyo receiver in my media room.
I physically have a 5.1 speaker setup.
When I try to change the number of channels, I get the generic playback error message asking me if I would like Media Center to automatically change it back to 2 channel audio.

After reading over the Wiki a little, I cannot find any reason why this isn't working.
Please help.

How is your PC connected to the Onkyo?

HDMI from the video card (GTX 770).

Try testing from Windows Control Panel > Sounds.

Testing what exactly?
Media center works just fine in 2-channel mode.

It won't work when I change channels to 5.1.

He's suggesting you try opening the windows sound control panel and use the sound test options there to see if windows can playback 5.1 with your hardware.  If the windows sound test doesn't work, JRiver likely won't work either.

See if you can get 5.1 when doing the test from Windows Control Panel.  If that won't work, it won't work in MC either.

I don't see any 5.1 option in the Windows Sounds menu.

Any idea how to go about doing this test?

The video card specifically states that it supports all major formats for digital audio over HDMI, including the one Media Center doesn't have the codec for by default.

I found it under Configure from the appropriate sound source in the list of playback devices.
After setting that to 5.1 and testing it there, now changing to 5.1 in Media Center works.

I am really surprised it has to be set in Windows like this.

Anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
