It appears that file names are limited to 30 character's.  Anyone know if there is away around this?

thats because your only using ID3v1.1 tags, you need to check the id3v2 taging in setup

id3v2 tags are set.  Is it because my MJ version is not the upgraded version, still in the 30 day trial?

No

But if they are already 30 chrs or less you cannot get blood out of a turnip

edit a tag, type more than 30 chrs, save

delete the file from the list, re-import it, it should be more than 30 chrs

i bled once after falling out of the back of a turnip truck

Phil: If the filenames are correct, you may be able to have MJ rename the tags from the file names

Well, you said that file names are limited to 30 characters.

So are you talking about filenames (Artist - Title.mp3) or are you talking about the tag?

i guess if mj is truncating the tags, it's also truncating the filenames that are based upon the tags

Hm... I'm not sure in which order MJ names files it rips.

If it's basing them from the tags, then sure. If it's basing them direct from CDDB or the library, then probably not.

I think it does it from the tags, though, so you're probably right.

Hi - I just noticed that some of my track names have been truncated somewhere along the line recently. I'm using v2 tags so I don't know why this would be - the only thing I can think of is the recent complete library "upgrade" process.

The strange thing is that it is only a few files. If I change the names to what they should be, update the tag in the file, delete the file from MJ and reimport then all is well. Weird.

First let me say, do something about this e-mail system.  For all who posted I received 2 mail alerts each!!

Here's the deal.  I rip, encode and file etc with different programs.  For filing/organizing I've been using RealJukeBox.  Since I don't know an id tag from my left foot I made the assumption RJB uses id 2 tagging since it has such an extensive propety set.  Everything was fine until I decided I wanted to print my library to disc in a text/doc/html format.  What I get is a .prn.  What to do with it other than print on a printer, I don't know.  Now I found MJB.  It has a nice print function but when I import my library, everything's chopped off at 30 characters.  This leads me to beleive RJB is writing id1 and filing the balance away somewhere.  So am I out to lunch here or is there a way to get this library printed without going back and editing all albums.

1. Disable email notification in your profile.

2. Real Jukebox is a piece of crap. It does only use ID3v1 tags. The rest is stored in it's proprietary database. Plus it's encoder is crap. It's a fast piece of crap, I'll give it that much, but it's still a piece of crap no matter how you slice it.

And with that mental image for everybody, I'm going to bed. Next Page

right on about Real's ID3 tagging limitations, and it's ancient mp3 encoder (many other problems there as well, but that's another story)

but

I'm still confused about one thing (regardless of whether its been answered--I'm still confused)

Phil

the file names in Windows Explorer (not the data that shows up within the MJ program)--are they truncated as well?

If the actual file name on the hard drive is correct, MJ may be able to sort out Real Jukebox's mess

Second,

do you really have that many song files with names that are over 30 characters?

Kitfox -- it was you, I believe

All is normal in explorer also the location column in mjb reflects that.  name artists album is where I loose it.  I have something over 50 album titles alone that are long named not to mention artists and song titles.  Within those are quite a few various artists type albums where the song title and artists are combined or some duo's like Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

In MJ, select the files with truncated data in the ID3 tags, right-click on them and then select properties, next select tools from the properties menu bar, and then you should have the option to "fill properties from filename." You may want to test one or two songs to start to make sure it's doing what you want. I've never used this feature, but others may be able to elaborate.

I'll give that a try tomorrow and see how it works out.  Its time to call it a night.

Thanks for the help

Good luck, Phil, and don't worry--it's not a "real-time" forum here, so sometimes you may not get a response to a post for days (weeks, sometimes). I'm working on the last of KingSparta's home-brew before I sack out (he's gonna be angry when he wakes up and goes to grab his usual "juice" for breakfast).
