MC crashing when resuming after Windows hibernation (with MCWS)
« on: January 08, 2015, 05:55:10 am »

MC is sometimes crashing when resuming after Windows hibernation.
Hibernation is done through MC with MCWS, and my RTI-driver is polling MC through MCWS every 1 second.

This has happened on both MC19 and 20; some version updates seemed to not crash at all,
but 20.0.52.0 has just now crashed. I think 20.0.49.0 was stable, but I'm not sure.

Info, log and dumpfile are attached;
but "Previous Log.txt"-file was too big, I can send it by email or upload by FTP if this is needed.

Do you have the option "Disable event style" checked in the WASAPI device settings?

I'm not using the WASAPI device;
I'm using Default Audio Device [Direct Sound],
which is the HDMI-output on the videocard.

But if I select WASAPI as the playback device temporarily,
the option "Disable event style" is NOT checked.

Attached are dump and logfile for a new crash today on 20.0.54.0.

The crash happens somewhere in Windows Audio stuff, not in MC, unfortunately that doesn't tell us anything at all.

Are you able to reproduce it?

So, are you working on this?
What is the status?

You're having a crash specific to you.  Sorry.

It means we don't think this is a JRiver problem.  Sorry.

Well, MC is crashing, so it is a problem in MC, and therefore it is a JRiver problem.

Are you saying that when a DLL/process called from MC is crashing,
then it is impossible to avoid MC crashing also?

It could be a bad driver.

It could be a bad driver.

You can't allow MC to crash because of a potentially bad 3rd party driver.

So I'm asking again:
Are you saying that when a DLL/process/driver called from MC is crashing,
then it is impossible to avoid MC crashing also?

Hibernation
◾This takes everything you have running on RAM, including open windows and apps, and moves it to a special file on your hard drive.
◾Then your computer shuts down completely.
◾When you turn your computer back on, it grabs everything saved in that file faster than if you’d shut down the computer normally.
◾This option doesn’t consume any power or battery life because your computer is technically off.
◾This option is best if you’re going to be away from your computer for more than a few hours.
◾The main downside of hibernate is that hibernating and rebooting your computer takes a lot longer than just letting it fall asleep then waking it back up. Time is a precious resource, and you don’t want to waste it in front of a booting computer. So, only hibernate your computer if you’re going to be away from it for prolonged amount of time.
◾You will not be able to run any programs while your computer is hibernating.

Sleep
◾This is sort of the inverse of hibernation: most of a computer’s operations (like the hard drive) are turned off and RAM is placed in a minimum power state.
◾When you “wake up” your computer, it boots quickly. This is because your computer is still on and using power/battery life when its sleeping.
◾Use this option if you’re going to be away from your computer for a couple minutes or maybe an hour, like if you getting lunch or coffee.
◾A sleeping computer is still a working computer: it’s still running basic functions and using electricity. After a while, putting your rig in sleep mode can affect your computer’s performance. Give your processor a break from time to time and shut down your computer.
◾As with hibernation mode, you will not be able to use your computer when it’s asleep. Yes, your applications will still be “running” while your computer’s asleep, but they’ll be in standby mode, and can be resumed once you wake up your computer.

it would help to know your os and desktop or laptop....sleep and hibernate have know issues and are diffrent for mentioned systems....Some computers don't sleep well. I suggest you try preventing the adapter from sleeping and see if it helps.

also let it go into hibernate like you always do ie: with the programs you normally allow to hibernate, wait a half hour or so then wake it up and before doing anything else do a chkdsk. is this a standard spinning disk or is it a SSD?

another thing....is this computer a client or a server of MC ?

If the foundation is shaky, the house may crumble and fall.  A lot of other things have to work for MC to work.  Try DirectSound or WASAPI.  Try both modes for WASAPI (Event Style on and off).

I have tested now many times with four media players:

  • Windows Media Player
  • VLC
  • Zoom Player
  • MC 20.0.62

All programs are playing the same file at the same time;
and then while playing, I hibernate the PC, and then resume.

MC is crashing every time,
all other programs are running fine; no crash.
Zoom Player and Windows Media Player stops playing the file either at hibernate or at resume (can't tell),
but VLC is continuing to play perfectly fine after resume.
All four programs are using default audio device (Direct Sound).
I have also tried all other devices and settings for MC (alone); it still crashes.

Do you still want to blame the driver?

That a single program crashes and others do not can not rule out a driver problem or even an OS problem since each program exercises the other software in different ways.

If you use Theater View, for example, MC uses DirectX's 3D drawing.  Others may not.

Why are you allowing TAO1857 disrespecting me and basically calling me stupid http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bullheaded (I wasn't even talking to him/her).

DSKO,
I don't believe TAO has done anything other than tease you a little.  Bullheaded means stubborn.

But let's just stick with facts now, rather than having fun with anyone or complaining.

Could you send me the e-mail address under which you purchased?  I can't find one for the address you used for the forum.

I'm jimh at jriver.

I included a link to Merriam-Webster, where you will see that bullheaded = stupidly stubborn.

Apology accepted.

And thank you for trying to help me; much appreciated!
I hadn't come around to respond to you and your suggestions,
because I had already found out at the time that all the other media players are working fine every time after resume.
To me, that tells it all.
