Just turn Media Network off to see what happens and report back.  Tools > Options > Media Network.

OK. Here's what I did now:
1. Enable logging (usually off) and wait a minute to log some more DLNA events, if any;
2. Turn Media Network > OFF (to include that step in the log);
3. Let MC run another few minutes, seeing a clear drop in CPU & storage use (due to the DNLA library unloaded);
4. Turn Media Network > ON again, and after another minute stop logging to post the datafile.

Looking forward to your findings...

I'm not clear.  Are you saying there's no CPU usage issue when media network is off?

So in other words, that's the smoking gun?

Good point ;-) -- However, I had previously changed some settings in "Auto Import" (so far the assumed cause) by excluding all but one folder from the list (of 5 more). Unlike the other folders, all of which are on external USB drives, this one is on the local HDD and only used for TV recordings, re-endodes etc so usually contains very few files... This change made CPU usage drop already beforehand (as tested earlier, it was one of my 'mixed web video' folders that would lead to increased CPU load, even though all files inside were scanned and imported long ago...).

Hope that makes sense ;-)

You didn't answer Matt's question.  It is simple:

When you turn off Media Network, does the responsiveness and high-CPU usage issue disappear?

Yes or no?

Forgiveness if I'm not as fast a typist -- it's half past 4 in the morning on my continent ;-)
Besides, I also hoped that my logfile will reveal more insight...

No problem.  But, answering that question is important.  If we can narrow it down to one set of systems within MC, it makes it much easier to look for possible problems in the Log.

Still waiting on a yes or no.  ;)

OK. As I said, excluding all (but 1) folders from AI had normalized CPU usage already, that is before Media Network was turned off (answer = no).

(NB: I'm off for now. Thanks for your replies after office, and see you tomorrow!)

So my understanding is that disabling one of the folders from auto-import fixed your CPU usage issues.

Can we try to determine what auto-import was doing with that folder?  Enable it and watch.  Could it be analyzing audio?  That's a one time thing but requires a lot of CPU.

You can disable that in auto-import configuration to test.

Thanks.

Indeed. However, I had already tried that procedure at some point (see earlier in this thread) and identified a 'mixed web video' folder as triggering CPU loopings... Some 'unknown audio' files found inside were re-encoded which seemed to fix the issue, but it started again later... Strange enough, no new files had been added to that folder in the meantime...

As explained before, all files in this and all other folders in my library are properly imported incl. thumbnails, their data seems complete. Are there any specific data fields I might search to find missing tags...?

My import settings are:
Album cover download: disabled;
Audio analysis: disabled for both audio and video files;
Writing tags when analyzing: disabled;
Fetch movie & TV info: disabled;
Generate thumbnails: enabled;
Match up with external changes: disabled;
Repair invalid links: disabled;
Ignore files previously deleted from library: disabled.
