Shared DB Confusion
« on: February 27, 2015, 11:55:25 am »

I'm about 75% of the way through setting up my media folders. Ouch! Time consuming..

My questions are

1) Are the below links the right ones I should be looking at (read them and it didn't seem to help me set it up)
2) do I need to tell each client that it's DB is located at \\server\folder
3) What if my DB server is also the one that has the media on it.   Do all the systems (including the server) have to use the same mount point.  Eg; on the server it's m:\media,  but on the other systems it maybe F: (since I mapped the media folder to the drive)---   DO they all have to be identical for hte DB to point to the right file
4) Is there more updated documentation?

Links that I've read

This seems to talk about just sharing a media folder
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Sharing_a_media_library_with_multiple_users_on_a_home_network_%28LAN%29

Seems to detail what i'd like - specifically "ust have your main MC server run the analysis and when it's done - all client computers will enjoy the new analyzed files."
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=92365.0

This is "outdated' per the FAQ but seems to describe parts of what i'm looking for.  But i'll start on my local LAN

I have to run out now, but briefly I'm reading some confusion between the lines.

Do not confuse the media server (in this case JRiver) with your NAS.

Although each client has what is referred to as a "Main" library; normally all clients would be loading the Server PC's library.

So yes all of the clients need to know where to look, but as long as you are loading the Server PCs library, the clients will just be "served" the media. It is possible to have multiple libraries being shared across a network, but usually this should be avoided, IMO.

It doesn't matter where the media is as long as the server PC has access to it and its configured in autoimport (whether set to automatic or not)

I worte this to help someone with a headless set-up (version 18) but its generally more or less the same in prinicpal with version 20 having more options and output configurations are by zone => http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=81262.msg564424#msg564424  this covers a lot of basics on set-up, most of which are still the same.

Thank you both, I'll give this a go in the next day or two.

So my understanding was partially correct but where my big misunderstanding was that the folder with the media had to be the same on each.  For example, server and clients both had to have m:\media as the main root folder, but this is not the case right (just to confirm)

Arindelle, thanks for your link, this will help me.  One item though did you have to create a share for where the main library was (C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center <version>\Library )

Glynor, as always, thank you as well.
