One off recording never stopped recording
« on: February 27, 2015, 08:59:32 am »

I have deleted the file, but I set up to record just a single show last night (not a subscription), I use .ts.  The .ts file came out fine, but the .jtv file never stopped, it was still being recorded this morning...but it was only 18 GB or so (iirc), so I believe it was only the 4 hours that the time shifting buffer saves...I'll see if I can reproduce it and get more details.

I should mention that I had 3 other programs record that were all subscription based, and they worked just fine.

I had the same thing happen last night with MC 20.0.79.  I scheduled a one-off recording of a half hour show and two hours later it was still recording. I waited a while longer and it continued recording indefinitely (and caused a UI hang in media center).  It only stopped recording when I restarted JRiver.

well, more details for me, if it helps.  I scheduled the recording from a client PC.  all of my PC's are running the latest code (.79).  It was on an OTA tuner (HDHomeRun).  Like mwilliams, it was a 30 minute show.  I scheduled it through theater view, by selecting it from the EPG, and clicking on record.  I then clicked 'Finish Now...' (IE: I didn't set any other options).

I am also on an HDHomerun tuner, but mine is the cablecard Prime version.  I scheduled the recording from the server using standard view.  As noted above I'm on MC version 20.0.79.

I also have a prime in the system, but the specific channel I recorded on should have been OTA, unless my channel groupings (and priorities) are not being honored.

I have recorded a few shows (some are still going on), and so far I am not seeing any problems.  Tried recording on both HDHomeRun and HDHomeRun Prime.  Tried either jtv or ts.  Tried scheduling directly on the server as well as from a client.

My clock is correct within 20 seconds.  I scheduled a couple of more recordings from 12:30 to 1:00.  I will see what happens at 1:01.

I'm trying again to see what happens.  The only other thing I can think of is that I upgraded from .70 to .79, and rebooted after the upgrade.

Next time when it happens, please grab a log for me.  Not sure if the log will show anything, but I need every lead I can have.  I hate it when a problem only occurs here and there, now and then, but unfortunately a lot of them are like that.

Just had it happen again...sort of...it looks like the wife left TV running all night, or at least all morning, and so I went in and pressed stop, however, it wouldn't release the tuner, and kept the time shift buffer running.

I haven't been able to repeat it.  In the past (when I used to have more issues with my tuner) what seemed to trigger it reliably was recordings that extended beyond my timeshift window.  So if I have it set to timeshift for an hour, recordings longer than an hour would trigger it, etc.

Is logging on?  Grab the log if available.

Also go to Tools > Options > Television > Advanced > Show Status, can you see if the user is still in use?

sorry, I shut it down so it would free up the tuner, however, I did check the tuner status and it did show that it was busy serving a client.  I also checked the clients just to be sure, and none of them were watching TV.

In the future, if it happens again, will it be sufficient to turn on logging after I notice it, or how do you want me to do that?  Typically it will be hours later that I notice.

Maybe at some point in time someone was watching.  If we can establish that this is always related to client-server (not just recording), that would be a step forward.

Logging for such situation is always tough.  Turning on logging after you notice the problem will not help.  The event that might have been logged is already gone.

You have to turn it on from the beginning.  When you go checking on the server, do a reset if you do not notice any problem.  That way, hopefully we can keep the log small.  It depends on how frequently you go checking it.

Ok This is the second time this has happened. to me.
First time was 9 hours. (doc mcstuffins)
The most recent was sofia the first.
30 min show recorded 7 hours

This morning i tried to open MC. And i got the error that MC was still running and could not be opened.
When i tried to close from the tray icon. It warned me that a recording was in progress.
i hit cancel because i didn't want to interrupt any recordings.
The tray icon disappeared.
So i no longer could close MC or open it.

But gizmo still worked. And since i only needed gizmo i left it in this state.
7 hours later after the record finished i closed the MC process and looked at what it had done.

MC had just finished recording a previous show without issue.

I hope this helps track this down. If this happen for a good show.
i'll have to trim one of these massive videos to keep it on the hard drive.

Settings:
The first time i was recording jtv files.
time shift: Set to 4 hours
save on stop: Do not save.

Second time
Timeshift set to 4 hours
save on stop: Warn when worth saving.

No.  It looks very normal.

Please try collecting a log file.  Turn on the log on the server.  The problem with logging on the server is that it can become very large.  Maybe you can go to the server and check periodically (like every other day), and if very thing is normal, reset the log.  Send me the log as soon as you see a problem.

The log you sent me does not contain any info on recording "Sofia the first".  The log started after the 7 hour recording stopped.  If you restarted MC then, the relevant info might be in "Previous Log.txt".  If you still have that file dated 3/8/2015, please find way to forward it to me.  It may be too large for email attachment too.

Sorry, no logs, but it did happen to me again...this time though, I don't believe it was a recording, it was just live TV that didn't stop.

I hadn't seen it in a while, so I thought maybe it was fixed...and I should also mention that earlier in the thread, I mentioned I was on build .79, but discovered that I was not, at the time this first happened, I was on .74...I have since upgraded to .79.

yes, it was a client, our server is headless.

This is a bit of a concern as I just bought a TB SSD to add as my recording drive, and I don't want to hammer it with data that I don't want and reduce it's lifespan.

I will say I am 99% sure that stop was pressed, but I can't be certain, as I am not the one that watched the show...but it has been a long time since I have seen any of my family not use the stop button...maybe I will program the back key (on the remote) to also send a stop command as well...I can always use a keyboard if I need to circumvent that feature...

From Castius' log, it appears that the program hang while stopping recording on one program, and thus preventing the second program from being stopped.

Nothing I can think of right now.

From Castius' log, it appears that the program hang while stopping recording on one program, and thus preventing the second program from being stopped.

The hang occurred when the program was trying to release a tuner.  Are you using updated driver from SiliconDust?  If not, please try updating.

To further narrow it down, I adjusted logging a bit hoping we can get a better picture.  You can try using the DLL linked below:

JRTelevision.dll

Download, unzip, and copy into MC20 installation folder.  You can use the DLL with build 80.

Yes, that's why I'd like the option to turn off the compulsory time-shifting.  http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=70760.msg656460#msg656460
